OMG what did I do??

« on: July 24, 2010, 08:31:47 AM »
Hello All,
My name is Scott Howard. I've been a lurker here since relocating from Michigan in 2008. When I was 11 or so a friend of the family had a Westie and I knew back then that someday I'd own one.  Fast forward to the present, I'm now 47 and I finally pulled the trigger. This past Thursday I bought a 69' camper that I'm going to drive as I restore it. I'm on cloud 9. Really... I am.

This morning when I went outside to look at my new toy the reality of it hit me. I have no idea what the heck I'm doing. Common sense tells me to ignore the rust and cosmetics for now and focus on safety and reliability. So that is my game plan.

I'll post my pics here soon and would welcome any advice and direction you may have.

Scott

Welcome aboard.  You are on the right track. Fix the mech. and safety first . Read all you can about your project . We don't know what your mech. ability is so ASK A LOT QUESTIONS before for you jump into something that might get you into trouble.  There are no dumb questions. There is a lot of help here and at least you have picked a good year model to deal with.

Thank you both, I appreciate it. Repair manuals are ordered and I'm gathering all the tools I can get my grubby little hands on.

New questions are on the way as well I'm sure.

There's two ways to learn.

You could do it the way I did . . . try to figure it out on your own, break stuff, then have to go buy a manual and study it and find VW friends that will answer all those questions you have trying to fix the stuff you broke plus fix whatever it was you started out to fix in the first place.

Or, you can do it the way you've started out . . . get books and study, find people that have experiance and ask lots of questions before you attempt to fix something.

Both ways work . . . but trust me, my way can be VERY expensive and frustrating!

Welcome aboard!
