Wind Bag vs Air Bag

« on: February 17, 2010, 03:52:07 PM »
The air bag light came on this morning on our '05 Beetle. Anyone know what it means and is it okay to drive? Thanks for any help.

It is ok to drive,  the air bag system has sensed a problem with a compnent,  is it under warrenty?,  the air bag system may still deploy airbags and safty features in an accident,  my guess would be the pods system for the passenger seat, is it a convertable? excuss spelling

the seat belt latch is a pretty easy fix,  pull the seat and change out the latch,  they are pretty pricey, what color is yours i think i have on in the tool box

Contact cleaner prob. ain't gonna help.  Usually what happens is the harness breaks near the buckle assembly.  twist the buckle back and forth, look at the harness (taped up / running with the actual cable / bracket that the buckle is attatched to.)  Usually, you can see the actual wire broken.

ill take a closer look at it, might just have to take the seat out to get a good look, its a bit tight in there.  a little solder  probly wouldnt help i guess... itll probly still throw of the resistance.  :?

Correct.  do not solder wires on a VW, they don't like it.  Airbag wires are especially sensitive.  The way i was talking about checking the buckle can be done without taking out the seat.  fold the buckle all the way left, all the way right and look where the wires go into the bottom of the buckle, if the wire is actually broken, you should be able to see it right there where it goes into the plastic body of the buckle.

When they break there, there is no good way to fix them.  Just to replace the buckle assembly.

As always, thanks Travis, Rick and everybody. Hannah's driving this car to school now and things like this make a daddy nervous! You know.
