Vanagon Rebuild or Subaru Conversion

« on: April 30, 2013, 11:19:44 PM »
Went on a trip this last weekend and I think my motor might be on its last leg. I've got an 87 Vanagon and I'm wondering two things. First has anyone around ever done the Subaru conversion? I know they can get pricey but that extra horsepower sure would be nice driving through the mountains. I've seen a lot of info online via samba and other websites but it doesn't look like anyone in the southeast does the conversions. Second, if I go ahead get the ole 2.1 L Wasserboxer rebuild does anyone have any suggestions on who I should take it to around Chattanooga or who might be willing to rebuild it?

Joy's uncle Ted is in the process of doing a Subaru conversion on his 84 Vanagon.  He got the Subaru engine at Pull-A-Part which saved him a bundle (it was somewhere around $150 with the core charge and tax) and he's purchased most of the conversion items from Kennedy.  He's got a friend in Florida that will do the conversion, but he really doesn't want to drag it down there.  He's been trying to find a shop locally that would be willing to do it at a resonable price, but hasn't had any luck yet.

I have a KEP adapter for a subie to "Bus" (written on box). I am not going to use it, you are more than welcome to get it for $100 if interested. All it is missing is the Gland nut bearing for the Subie engine (can get from KEP).
