Still waiting on the diverter valve. What are the chances of the crank sensor causing my problem? Does anyone knwo where it is located on a 2005 1.8 passat?

I doubt the crank sensor is causing the problem as they're usually a work or don't work kind of thing.  You'll know they're not working because the engine will stop running.  The crank sensor/engine speed sensor is the only sensor that the ECM can't fake a signal from if it takes a dump.

It's located behind the oil filter just forward of the transmission.

Check the diverter valve with a hand vacuum pump and make sure that the diaphragm isn't broken.  If the diaphragm is broken it won't hold vacuum.  Also check the snow screen in the air filter housing and make sure it's not full of junk.

What were the fault codes you had besides the misfires?

I would have to buy a vacuum pump, the diverted valve should be here in a day or two. The only codes I have are misfires. Sal ran a vagcom on it it said to check the diverted valve but I don't know if it showed a code for that or not.

I just put the new diverted valve on but didn't have time to adjust it. So far it idels the same. I need to adjust it before I say that it didn't fix the problem but I don't really think that it will. I still think that it is a vacuum problem somewhere.

You prob need to take it to someone with some vw knowledge before you waste more time and money

I wish I had a dime for every time I have told people to go to someone who knew what they were doing if it was over my head. Most wouldn't until they completely destroyed the poor thing then tell me what a crappy car it was. Go figure ::) ::)

I took it to Village VW and the master mechanic couldn’t figure it out....Who else should I take it to and pay them $300 to get nothing done? They had the car for a week and only work on it for 3 hours. Then they wanted more time.... I told them that I could take the car home and open the hood and scratch my head and it not cost me $85 an hour. Screw Village VW. They tried to over-charge me for the diagnostics too. It says plainly on their website what the price of diagnostics  is and when I went to check out they tried charging $15 more an hour. I had to argue and yell at  the rep for 5 min to get him to understand that he was over charging me before he fixed the price. Not to mention paying them for nothing. They could fix the problem because they couldn’t even determine the problem.

What is the point of having a technical section on a VW forum if your going to suggest taking the car VW mechanic? You could put that on every thread but it doesnt really help anyone when they have already done that and its still not fixed.

If no one else has any ideas I will take it back to Sal. Let him take a try at figuring out what it is.

Don't know what to tell ya. Sorry to hear you had a bum time with Village; I've never dealt with them before. I know some folks in the club have gone to the dealer in Dalton (even driving past Village to get there). The majority of us are into the air cooled vws. I was actually impressed to see so many responses. I wish I had the knowledge to help you, but I don't even know what a diverter valve does, let alone how to diagnose it. When you find out, I hope you stick around help others with what you learn. After all, its individuals who make any forum worth anything.

Ill share what the problem is whenever I firgure it out. I have worked on many vehicles and this is the only one that I haven been able to correct. It made me feel a little better that the dealer couldnt find the problem actualy. At least I know that I checked everything they did.

I have searched lots of fourms and found some people with the same simptoms but none of them had any resolutions posted or they still havnt found out what the problem is.

Ive still spent less money buying parts then I did at the dealer and at least I have new parts that shouldnt wear out as quickly.

Ill take the car back to Sal and give him a go at it. He doest charge for diagnostics. He only charges to fix the problem. That is awesome!

Whats the point of a tech section ??  You might find a the answer to some problems through experience of others, but you have to remember that most folks on forums anywhere are   hobbyist and not career techs and don't have a degree from MIT and when it gets over their head, thats the time most will refer you to a shop/ dealership that can deal with weird problems. With the autos getting more and more complicated its getter harder to repair anything without proper training. That doesn't say that a 15 year old couldn't walk up and tell you to wiggle something and it works after you paid good money for nothing. I'm sorry you had a bad experience with the dealer. Maybe that 15 year old will come by. Its happened to me after 50 years in the trenches and I  was a factory trained Aircool mech.  Our forums have helped a hell of a lot people over the years for free, so please don't knock them.

Im not knocking the forums. I love the forums and have learned a lot from them. I just think that if I post a question and someone doesnt know the answer, that there is no point in replying:

Your waisting you time and money because you dont know what your doing, take it to someone that does.

That fairly rude and doesnt help. If someone doesnt know what Im asking then dont reply. Someone else will read it eventualy and will reply with something that helps. Thats all im trying to say.

Of course they are going to reply even if they don't know what to tell you except they just might know who can fix things. If nobody replies then you are going think that nobody gives a crap about your problem. But we do and are curious to what it may be. I'm sorry if you think some of us were rude to you , but I didn't find that to be the case after I read the whole thread. I know you are getting a frustrated over your car and have spent some money to no avail but someone will show up and make you happy again
About the forums, We kid and jump on each other about things but it all in fun. I'm always a victim for this kind of abuse . I just fire back and get my licks in. Thats what made our forums known all over the country :D
