Trying to prioritize...

« on: August 26, 2011, 12:43:09 PM »
It's time to sink a little money into Myrtle again....

I have noticed that every time I turn on the AC now, she'll start bucking and losing acceleration when I'm in lower gears.  She'll run fine, but once it begins, I'd have to shut the car off and restart it to make it quit, only to pick up again shortly.  Additionally, she'll frequently just shut off completely while moving.  Most of the time I'm either coasting or slowing down.  I can't remember it ever doing this when there's a load on the engine, like going UP the mountain.  Usually, I keep rolling and she starts back up within 20 seconds and I'm back on my way.

I've had friends with older cars who laughed and said they had to turn the air off when they were driving up the mountain, or they wouldn't have made it.  Is something similar happening to Myrtle?  She does great coming up the mtn. though.  It's going down with the air on, or at a cruising speed that I have to cross my fingers.

I can pretty much count on the above to happen when I have the air on.  98% of the time it does not happen if I don't.  That being said, all the above has happened without the air or blower being on.

BTW:  I have a new alternator and battery, but the ignition coil is the original.  If connected, that's the next thing on the chopping block.

Interestingly enough, my 89 cabriolet does the exact same thing. and when it happens, all I have to do is turn it off and start it back up to cure it. I would also like to know what causes this.

you def need to replace the coil, thant could be the problem, also the spark plugs, wires cap or rotor could be a problem also, i had a 1.8t that would die first thing in the am and the customer was surprised that spark plugs fixed the problem
