Check faults for a crank sensor,  I think you have to have a signal from the crank sensor for the ECM to activate the fuel pump
If the Crank sensor was bad, wouldn't the car not start at all?
I'll try to get my friend to hook up the VAGCOM to the passat and see what is going on.
How much is a VAGCOM setup?

The crank sensors usually are intermittent ,  they may work untill they get warmed up or may work all day then not the next day

You should be able to get a lot of info and codes from a basic scanner

The trigger comes from the door lock module, then to the ccm, then to the Ecu, then to the fp/engine electronics relay, number 429 I think (don't hold me to it im shooting from the hip) then out the fuse to the pump.

Do you have issues with the door not unlocking all the time or randomly locking itself?
Sal,
I have not noticed it locking weird, other than my fob seems weak, will only open from right near the car even with new batteries.  My wife's fob is great though.
I do not drive the car any more, but will ask my wife about any strangeness with the locks.
Is relay 429 specific just to the FP when the door is opened or is it utilized when the car is cranking and running...
I appreciate all the help, and contrary to David's omens, we like the car.
Sal, I think I came by your house once to look at a swallowtail 4 door you had, I was in a white beetle (autostick), was that you ?
KC

That was me. Still have the autostick? I don't have the swallowtail. The relay I was referencing is used all the time not just for priming the system. And I was wrong on the number it's 409. Like giddy up.

I'm happy that you like your Passat. The models I was referring to were the early ones that were a electrical/mechanical  nightmare.  Like timing belts breaking on the only available engine at that time ,the 2.0 16V (big mess) at low milage and automatic tranny's that had a mind of their own if they didn't pour all the ATF out first. I'm sure that a lot of them had a happy life but it seemed like every time one came in the shop the owner had a list a mile long . Nothing was routine.

OK,
nice to put a face with the name. Nope, the ASbug didn't cut the final draft about 2 years ago. I had it almost 4 though!

I discussed the FP problem with my friend here at work who is an H20 VW guy and he asked was the horn honking when I locked the doors... It isn't honking now, but was recently. He stated that I needed to reintialize the door locks and see if that cured it...
Strange.
Does that sound right?

OK it appears that the fuel pump should be working (getting power) at 4 times during a driving cycle.:
1) when the door is opened (? sec.)
2) when the key is inserted in the ignition (1 sec.)
3) when the engine is cranked over
4) when the engine is running.

I am getting 3 &4, but not 1 or 2.
either 1 or 2 would work for me, but i am getting neither.
Any ideas, the vortex isn't being friendly or helpful on this one, lotsa people have had this problem and either no help posted or no responses as to what actually fixed it.

Yes you could try to reinitialize the door locks. Does you interior some light come on when you open the door? If not the door lock module is bad or put of sorts. Therefore it won't know to prime your fuel system when the door opens.

This would only possibly cause a delay in start,  we replace driver door latches all the time an they never cause a starting issue

OK,
Update - I pulled fuse 7 and 28 again last night and checked them with a multi tester for ohms, all checked out great.  I pulled the covers off the pump again and opened door, nada.  I put the key in the ignition and turned it to on, the pump is cycling for a second or two, so I have power at 3/4 of the possible times.
I didn't get to drive it yesterday as it was late when I was messing with it.
Horn beeps when doors lock and lights come on when door is opened...
Lights go off on door when door is closed.
It is hard to tell if it is "fixed" or not, because I had ran it, but it appears that if you allow the pump to cycle when the key is turned to on, then it will start, takes about a second longer of cranking than I am used to, but it will start.
I need to check it when it has been sitting all night to confirm this.
I read that the prime that occurs when the door is opened only happens when the fuel pressure is low on the rail, where is that sensor?
I looked at the (now dried out) OEM fuel filter that I pulled the other day and blew out the Gozen side and nothing of any significance came out.  Filter was a VW one and looked crusty, but apparantly had nothing in it...
Any and all help is appreciated.
I hope to have a doggle and software here by the end of the week that will allow me to pull the VAG codes.
It isn't one for graphing, just a reporter one (ebay, shipped for $15.)

Thanks,
KC
