Rear wheel cupping on 07 Passat

« on: May 30, 2012, 09:11:09 PM »
I am getting conflicting information on the caused of rear wheel cupping (inside l/r).  Car has had no damage and this seems to have been a problem since new.  Alignment shop says rear end is in spec.. Any suggestions?

When I think of cupping I usually think of the center of the tire being worn out from over inflation. If the inside is wearing or feathering, it can be anything from a warped wheel, the rear may be in spec while at rest, but maybe a worn component at speed is causing your issue. With the previous generations the solid rear beams were bad about bending out of spec and no one wanted to bend them back to correct the camber.

most time wheel cupping is caused from wheel tramp..easiest way to explain is wheel is going down the road like a ball bouncing.balance may even be ok but shock or strut is wore out. common on motorhomes that i work on.just my 2 cents

Lack of tire rotation is the biggest cause,  we have seen cars cup the rear tires with a good alignment

I use to see a lot of early Rabbits and GM cars cup out rear tires. You could ride along beside them and hear the noise. Sounded like mud grips. Is this a front wheel drive thing with most of the weight on the front end and the rear axle just riding along ? We just rotated the tires when no problem was found. Strange. ???
