Panicking About My '05 Bug!

« on: March 28, 2010, 10:07:02 PM »
Hey everyone!

I don't know that I've posted before, so Hi!  I have an '05 Bug Convertible and learned that it needed a new transmission.  A friend/coworker new a guy who she swore was great so I took my car to him.  He's had it for over 3 weeks now and half the time I can hardly get a hold of him!  I'm panicking and I don't know who else to call!  I avoid the dealership when I can to save some money, but if that's my last shot then well that's where I'll go.  Who in town is good to work on my baby?  Surely there is someone here who won't screw me over and give me the run around!  I may be young and female, but I love my car and I don't appreciate mechanics who think they can do whatever just because of that fact.  I love my lil blue baby and I am terrified I'm going to go get her and everything is going to be messed up!  I should have known better than to use a friend of a friend.  Please help! This was always my dream car!

Thanks for the welcome!  I'm really hoping someone can help me out ASAP!  I'm calling this guy in the morning and quite possibly a tow truck to come sweep my baby away to someone who actually will care about her!  I should have known so much better   :(

The dealership is more expensive but in chattanooga we have several guys who only drive vw's and care about cars who work there,  we also won't perform repairs until OK'ed by the customer

Thanks Rick!  I will probably be giving you a call today!

travisyoung, you guys have always been great to me when I've come out there.  Even my little dogs don't get scoffed at when I have them traveling with me (big bonus, I hate when people look annoyed by them!  haha). I found out through facebook friends that an old friend from high school's grandfather owns the dalton VW dealership, but towing my baby that far out is probably going to be a wee bit more than what I want to have to spend.  Although at this point...hah

I remember talking to someone who was on hwy 58 too when the problem first started, but of course (my luck) I somehow managed to not save the name or number in my phone.  I just remember getting the number from another mechanic that I somehow found through google which led me to a post on here.

What is really bad is I thought two weeks tops without my car, but now I'm really panicking because we leave for the beach Saturday.  Well we're supposed to...we'll see if that happens now that I don't know what kind of shape my car is in.

I'm no mechanic, but it can't possibly take 3+weeks to put a transmission in a car right?

Hind sight is 20/20, eh?

Its takes about 3 days to order one and two days to put it in if we are not very busy,  possibilty it could be low on fluid or a bad sensor,  the dealer does not do internal transmisson repairs on many of our transmissons, we just replace with a rebuilt with a 12/12 warranty

yeah that's what Max in service was telling me when I called this morning.  Conveniently this guy has my car in pieces now that I told him first thing this morning I needed to come get it to take somewhere else.  *ripping hair out*  as soon as it's done, I'm taking it for a thorough inspection to make sure everything is OK!  For him to have had it for over 3 weeks now.....I worry!  This same guy actually changed the fluid for me when he told me I already need a new one and it got even worse than it had been before.

what would you guys do if I rought it in to have it looked at, just to make sure everything is OK?  I know I can just drive it and hope everything runs smoothly, but I'd feel better paying for peace of mind if someone else looked at it.  I'm pretty sure she's do for a tune-up, but god knows that's expensive too.  agh

thanks for the wishes.  Of course just like every other week this guy said the same thing after he had my car in pieces already, "I'll do my best to have it ready today."  Shocker - it's not ready!  I am so beyond livid that I think there may actually be smoke coming out my ears.  I was ready to have it towed elsewhere today, but he claimed he was already working on it.  Gah!!

ends up (after a lot of crap) that I'd be better off trading her in....  :'(  Now I have to find another used bug at a good price with everything I wanted.  This absolutely sucks....

Who told you that? And what was their reason? Because, as far as I can remember you could replace the transmission a few times in the new Bugs before you've spent more on the transmissions than the car.  ???
