Dead Ingnition on a 97 Passat

« on: March 24, 2012, 03:29:50 PM »
Just when I thought it was roadworthy . . .

Franny called this afternoon.  The Passat is dead in the water.  The past few days it has sputtered and died several times at stop signs but always started back up.  I put some fuel system cleaner in it to see if that might help.  Today it died when she stopped at the end of her driveway and wouldn't re-start.  I could smell gas when I try to start it.  I couldn't find any disconnected wires or vaccum lines, so I pulled the coil wire and had her spin the engine over.  The ignition is not firing at all.

I was going to put a coil on it before I went any further . . . Until I went to AutoZone and found out they wanted $107 for one . . . I don't mind swapping parts to locate the problem if the parts are used or cheap, but I really hate to start throwing $100 bills around.  If anyone has a used coil they are willing to sell, or if you know how I need to go about troubleshooting this system, I would really appreciate the help!  It doesn't have breaker points, so I'm in over my head.   ???

Disconnect the coil wire from the distributor cap and just lay it in the cap so that you can see the end of the wire.  Have someone crank the engine and see if you see a spark.

Oh, and don't touch the coil wire with anything while the engine is cranking.  The newer coils put out quite a bit more voltage than an aircooled coil and a shock from one of them can do some serious damage.

Actually, 100 bucks for a coil isn't that bad but I would strongly suggest getting one from the dealer.  The last one made it 15 years, didn't it?

I got a coil from Eike right before he left. He said it's for a Vanagon with electronic ignition. I don't know if it's for air-cooled or water-cooled, or if it would fit your Passat or not. The part number is 1 220 526 016 if you want to look it up. If it'll work, you can have it.

I had already checked the coil wire for a spark . . . and when I didn't see anything, I "felt" for one.  I've been bitten by this ignition system before so I did know it light you up if it's working right.  This one was stone cold dead.  Since the nearest one I could find was in Ft. Oglethorpe, I thought I'd see if Matt could get one at a discount . . . turns out Matt had a good used one off of a Eurovan!  I plugged his old used coil in and it fired right up.   8)

Now if I figure out why there is antifreeze on top of the transaxle . . .

My bet is that the coolant flange on the side of the cylinder head is leaking.

I thought I'd fixed it a couple of weeks ago.  It has a plug in one of the sensor outlets and it there was always a little coolant standing in the center of it.  When I replaced it, I could see a hairline crack on the inside of old one.  But, there is still a leak.  I've got a new flange and new o-rings on the way . . . I think I need to go ahead and replace my heater hoses too.  The good news is that the coolant leak is very slow and it's no longer leaking inside the car . . . I can get to this stuff without disassembling half the vehicle!   ;D

No, thank goodness! It's the 2.0 ABA with an automatic.  I don't think I'm quite ready for a VR6 or a turbo.  ;D  I'll leave those to the pros!

Oh, and I just noticed I said it was a 97 in the title of the post.  It's actually a 96. ???
