ball bearing in the combustion chamber

« on: September 21, 2011, 04:50:24 PM »
pulled a 2011 cc 2.0 turbo engine apart that had been run though water, the engine would run, but miss firing and making noise,  pull the head off and found a ball bearing in one of the pistons,  the head and pistons were pinged up on 3 cylinders though,  puzzled on how this ball bearing got in there,  turbo is intact, air filter and turbo pipes and innercooler had water but no damage

Is the ball bearing intact ?  Nice and round ?   If not, maybe its not a ball bearing. I pulled the head off a 2.0 Type-4 and found What thought was a ball bearing. Got to looking at it under a mag. glass . It turned out to be a nut when I spotted the remains of some threads. That nut had traveled to all 4 cyl's and beat up the pistons. The nut ended up nice and round.

deff a ball bearing nice and shinny and round about the size of a bb, i have seen the same damage in a 2.0 jetta 2000 model non turbo, it had a burnt valve, tore it down replace the valve and cleaned up the damage and it ran fine, there was no evidence of a ball bearing though

That is wierd....  :-\

I know some of the oil galley passageways are capped off by round, bearing looking guys and then the end is peened over... maybe it's one of those from the head or something...  ???

I don't know what to say about that other than its a shame that somebody purchased a 2011 VW with loose Balls. I bet that hurt when you jumped speed humps or drove down Brainerd Rd in the outside lane  ;D ;D ;D ;D
