Is the car Digifant?  If so, make sure that the injector harness isn't shorted out and that none of the injectors are leaking.  Also, check the resistance on each of the injectors.  I don't know what the spec is but on most of the later cars it's around 15 - 20 ohms.

Since I do not own a water cooled VW, take this with a grain of salt.
I seem to remember that if one of the windings is bad on 1 injector, it will ground out all the injectors...  Sounds like your problem, pull the harness, no ground, idles good.  plug it back on / hits the bad winding in the injector, and presto no runny.

Change positions of the injectors if you can get it out w/o buggering up the seal, I bet your problem will follow the injector around.

KC - This advice is free and worth every penny you paid for it!!!

Rick at R&M is great!  He has worked on our son's GTI and we have taken the New Beetle to him to have some things checked out.  Great service and very reasonable on his charges and if it's something he can't take care of is not afraid to refer to someone who can fix it for you.   :)
