« on: April 23, 2010, 08:42:37 PM »
I'm going to look at 85 Vanagon GL sunday and I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions as to problem areas I should look for?

Thanks,

Sid

If it is this one, I'd definitely start out looking at the body (for rust and dents), crawl under and check out the belly of the beast, and check out the head gasket and look very closely and make sure it's not the actual block that is cracked. Other than that, check out the motor and make sure it's all there and since he says it'll run for a minute or two, have him crank it and scoot it around for a second if he will. Other than that, I can't just think of anything else to look at.

Fancy that, we're both Cid and Sid.

All I can say is "Feet don't fail me now" .   Very, very, very, costly engine to maintain and they were forever leaking coolant. Since this van is all ready blowing coolant its about done . It your bank account. And on top of that,I don't know anybody thats worth his salt around here would even think about working on that "Critter".

I ended up purchasing the Vanagon. It wasn't the one mentioned above on craigslist and so far I'm pretty happy with it. It is surprisingly clean underneath. So clean I was somewhat hesitant initially buying it. My 70 Campmobile generally looks like a swamp monster underneath with a thin film of oil all over it but this bus was clean.  I parked it in the garage and put newspaper under it to see if I had any coolant overnight and so far no leaks. It is missing a few things that would be nice to have and are probably legally required.  Windshield wipers,  review mirror, left brake light but over all I’m pretty happy with it. On that note does anybody know where I might be able to find a rear bench seat that folds into a bed?

TheSamba, or busdepot.com would probably have them. I'd check Busdepot first.
