Vice Repair

I've got a cheap vice I picked up for 5 bucks at an estate sale last year. It's worked great for the lightweight stuff I mess with, but the other day I overtightened it and busted the threaded piece inside. I could go buy a new vice from Harbor Freight (I think that's where this one came from) for $39, but the next time I overtighten it I'll be in the same boat. I don't want to pay over $100 for a "real" vice either, because I don't use it that often. Do any of you know a local machinist that might be able to make me one out of something stronger than this brittle cast iron?
