Here we go!

« on: May 11, 2015, 11:26:13 PM »
Just signed up/in. I have owned a 1965 Beetle rewired 12 volt and a 1973 tintop camper Bus. The Bus was my alltime favorite ride for everything! Looking to own a VW again, maybe a Rabbit Truck??? Must have A/C so watercooled is OK with me. I once drove from the Shreveport LA airport to Nacogdoches TX on 2" of ice on the road in the '65 Beetle. Took some time but the Beetle was surefooted and gave me no trouble at all driving at a reasonable speed. The Beetle and Bus got me through many snowy/icy winters with flying colors. The Beetle was stock except for the 12 volt conversion. The Bus was 10 years old when I bought it and the dual carbs. were needing replacement so I got with Herman the German in Rossville and installed a single carb. Weber intake replacement with excellent results. This Bus had the 1700cc Porche engine and plenty of power! Who wants to help me get back into a VW ride? Can't wait! :vw:

I think I struck up a deal with Harry W. Guinn today. He has several Rabbit diesel trucks in various stages of repair. Some for sale. I'm not looking for a showcar, just a daily driver that is reliable and comfortable. Mr. Guinn showed me a white 1981 without A/C. He worked up a price for the '81 in running condition with A/C added. Mr. Guinn strikes me as a practical man, not a purist. If I want matching numbers, etc. go somewhere else. So is it safe to buy a DD from Mr. Guinn? He was friendly and chatty, but I came away wondering if I had a deal or not. ???

I've bought a few parts from Harry over the years.  He's always been pretty friendly to me, although I've heard you can, every now and then, catch him in a really bad mood.  Like you have already figured out, he's not a purist . . . I was at his place once looking for some parts and saw him putting a dual-carbs on a Vanagon because the fuel injection system was shot.  He's not notorious for working fast, but he seems to have a pretty good reputation for the work he does.  I've never had him do any work for me, so I'm just going by what I've heard over the years.  He's always treated me fair on stuff I've bought from him.

Harry is a great guy, just an old fart.
I used to go by on my lunch breaks when I worked with Zen and shoot the breeze with him.  Knowledgeable and had a lot of NOS parts that he has been selling through a friend at BAP.
I am glad to hear he is still kicking.
If it is the White truck with no dash in it, it was his daily when I last saw him.
Thanks for the update.

The females in my family have a united front and say I should keep the 2010 Nissan Versa hatchback I currently own as a daily driver. It gets 25/38 MPG, can haul 4 fullsize adults comfortably, about 60K on the odometer, and a lifetime warranty thru MtnView Nissan. I have owned Nissans exclusively since 2000 and have never been let down. Guess I will stay with the Versa as a daily driver. One day I can afford a second car; will be looking for a VW Bus then.  ;)  :vw:  ;)
BTW, Nissan Versa is the people's car of the 20teens, IMHO.
