OK,
Wifey comes in today and car is stinking like gas in the back.
I do not see a leak, I pull the cap off the fuel pump area and nada, it is dry and does not stink. area of stinking is behind passenger's rear tire, NOT near fuel pump or filter...
Is there a recall on the metal gas lines? can one of you guys at the dealership let me know? it is a 2004 B5.5 Wagon. I'll get you the vin if you need it.  I do not think the smell is coming from the charcoal canister area either.
Car cannot be parked in garage with this smell.  I wonder if the extreame heat has any thing to do with it. Hasn't done this since I did all the work 5 days ago...
Any ideas? Any one want to look at it, and recommend a course of action?
I am about ready to take it to Herman in Dalton and let him see what is up...
Sal, you interested in looking at it?

I'll look at it. Leak detection pump could have cracked lines. They are vent and evap lines but it could give you the smell.

Definately heat related. Drove the car hard this morning to Dalton on the interstate for about a 20 min combined drive.  Got out and smelled - NADA @ 72* / 6:50 this morning.  Filled up car at gas station, drove it 10 minutes to house hugging curves and got out and smelled - NADA @~85* / 8:40 this morning.
Is there an expansion valve for the gas tank if it over pressures?
That is all I can think of.  It was showing 110* on the in dash temp guage yesterday when it was stinking and that thing seems to be about 6 degrees high because of the votex spoiler guarding the probe in a heat bath from the engine area....
Happy no smell, but will check it again this afternoon when the asphault is peeling up...

Have tried numerous times to replecate smell. both full and empty and in between, cannot get it to do it again.
Counting that as a blessing...

Just as a follow up to this thread, pump seems to have magically healed itself.
I have no idea as to why, but the problem of not cycling prior to cranking seems to be gone...
