Still sitting, with the FIL in the hospital and the truck needing new oil cooler lines installed, I just haven't had time.

Got the sputter while idleing and flashing CEL fixed at dealer, open check valve and some new hoses later, all is good...
Or is it!
The hard starts came right back when I left the dealer...same senario, hard to start after sitting 4+ hours, takes 2 tries. Well this morning it took 3 tries, then bamo it started.
Driving the munkins to school then the CEL light (my arch nemesis) came back on. no obvious problems and driving seems ok.
Run by the FLAPS after work and they pulled the following code P0171, a lean enviroment.
I am thinking my 7 month old pump is a turd. It has a 1 year warranty, so I'll just get a new one.  BUT in the off chance this isn't the problem, what could be causing this?
Hard starts corresponded with the new pump when the old one failed so I am thinking that this is a key observation...
It was EASY to start when the open check valve was acting up though...
Travis and Diesel doc,et al.  thanks in advance.

Lean code possibly caused by an air leak or air flow meter,  it is possible that low fuel pressure could cause a lean fault,  also the Evap system purge valve can cause weird stuff,  need to check fuel trim,  fuel pressure,  residual pressure,  also the pump is activated by opening the drivers door,  so if the latch is bad it may not build pressure then,  also look at Maf values

Man O Man !!!! Glad I don't have to work on those water-cool "peckerwoods".   You activate the fuel pump when you open the drivers door ??????   What kind of Crap is that ????

Was schooled real heavy on the Vortex that Passats do not activate the pump when door is opened... Lights come on when door is opened so that one would be out anyway...

Just thought I'd follow up on the second CEL issue.
There was another cracked hose they missed at the dealer, they fixed it for free.
BUT....
Starting problem still there.
When it is REALLY cold it will fire off on 1st try, then as the temperature rises, I have to crank for a sec then turn off and it will fire off like normal.
Well since the temperature was over 80 the other day, the passat had to be cycled 2 times before it would fire.
I am thinking FP (since it magically started doing this when I installed the new FP), or a leking injector. It appears that the passat is just supposed to hold pressure between driving cycles.
The fuel pump has a warranty, so I'll just get another and try it, but does the open injector sound reasonable?
Ran a tank of High test through it and have noticed NO difference between 95 and 85 octane in mpg. it does seem to be a little less hesitant when you get into it from a start off.

Try using a fuel pressure gauge,  I can get you the correct specs

Is there a tap on the rail or do I pull an injector and run?
I have a manual, I guess I could just read...

No you can loosen the fuel line connection at the rail with a 14 and 17mm wrench and put it inline there
