'04 Auto Passat Wagon Questions:

« on: October 03, 2012, 12:00:22 PM »
Short Story: wifey hit a really big rock and knocked an itty bitty hole in the AT pan.
I could weld it, but I am paying someone to just do a trans fluid change any way. So, I need a new AT pan and cannot find one one the internet easily (16,000,00 references to 04 Passat Automatic Pan Gasket thus far.... )
I figure if I have the part # then I can reference it that way.
Thanks fellas (and gals),
KC

The only stuff I have seen work I. It is Bg synthetic,  but depending on the miles ,  putting anything other than the VW stuff u are playing with fire,  do not attempt to flush it,  just add the bare minimum to top off,  you can do it at home but it is a little tricky and you will have to make a filler

I second that.  Don't use ANYTHING except the factory fluid. I don't care what you read about alternatives on the internet.

Look at it this way.  If you use something else, it might work with no problem.  Of course, it could also cook the transmission.  It's your dime.

Just as a future reference, I pulled the pan ground and welded it. ordered a kit from an online source and went  the whole jack up the car and and run trans while pumping it in route.
A note to any one doing this:
Make sure the hose for the pump is installed on the snorkle BEFORE you bolt on the pan, I did it and am sure that it would have been a pain to have fished the 3/8" hose through the little snorkle in the pan after it was installed.
Took almost all the 6 liters of fluid I ordered. Some stated it was 5 but I ordered 6 anyway and am glad I did, I literally had about 2 tsp. left.
It wasn't hard to do, just time consuming. I did it in about 3.5 hours including the repairs to the Pan, but feel confident if I had access to a lift I could have done it in about 1/2 the time.
This was about 2 months ago with no problems since.

CHANGE YOUR TRANS FLUID / FILTER - my wife's was NASTY after 116K miles.
It was shifting good, but didn't realize how much better it could be until we changed fluid.

Be careful on the fluid change,  never flush,  seen perfectly good trans toast after

Didn't flush, just drained, new filter, gasket and fluid.
It really was a noticeable change in how smooth it shifts now.
Never realized it until I changed the fluid.
The pan didn't have a hole, it had a hairline crack right on the driver's leading corner of the pan (lowest spot area).
As stated, not a pain to do, but it left me wanting to tap the trans for a fill tube hole.

It is crazy how difficult they have made it to fill,  but with the expensive fluids and transmissions I can understand why they don't want DIY guys to put dexiii in there the first chance they get

More Questions:
OK, Saturday was a BAD day.  Wifey's dad has mild heart attack and is in Memorial.
Sunday wifey goes to see him and hits a ladder in the interstate.  She was in the slow lane and was exiting off of Moore Rd.
Well she calls me and says the car is running rough and the CEL is on. I tell her to pull over and I go and exchange cars with her.

Factiods:
-Ladder was about a 6' red and aluminum Louisville (saw remnants about an hour later.
-Seems the car pretty much cleared the ladder, no damage to votex spoiler (lowered).
-It was raining VERY heavily when she hit the ladder.
-I see no dammage to any thing under car -No leaking fluids, etc.
-Car runs great and shifts good under load and when downshifting.
-Idles like crap, CEL blinks if you sit still under load (at a Red light or stop) for a while.
-CEL goes back to just on when you drive and move.
-Temps are normal.
-Took to FLAPS and they ran an OBD2 scan and it came up as multiple miss fires, then Cyl 1, Cyl 2, Cyl 3 misfires. (no cyl 4?).
-Coil packs appear to have already been replaced according to my H2O buddy.  (this was 1.5 years ago when I first got it - something about the color of them meant they were the new type.)

Questions:
Can the misfire be caused by any thing under the car?
She stated that the CEL didn't come on until after she hit the ladder.
She did say that about the same time she was hitting allot of water on the interstate.

-What should I check.
I do not just want to plop down $150 for new coil packs and that not fix the problem.
I plan on hitting the coil packs with a hair dryer and seeing if they are wet.
- Any other ideas?
KC

check the inner cooler,  on the drivers side in front of the wheel, pull the hose loose and see if it is full of watter, also check to see if it is cracked  or leaking
