2005 Jetta Diesel

« on: December 07, 2010, 02:44:19 PM »
My brother in Law is looking at buying an 05 jetta diesel w 90K miles on it.
The car was a local 1 owner and has all the records at the dealer.  No major issues, has had all the regular maintenance.
Has an automatic trans, is this a problem?
I have heard alot of problems with the AT in the beetles, is this the same one?
I have heard that these will go 300K ish with proper maintenance.
It has already had the scheduled maintenance done.
BIL is a noob with mechanics and needs to drive this car alot (why he wants a diesel.)
Any one have any warnings or things to look for, he is just nervious about buying a used car... But this seems to be an OK one.
(They are asking about $2K too much, but he doesn't care...)
Appreciate any help,
KC

$2k too much???... Strike one.... ::)

Is it the 2005-2010 body style or the 99.5-2005 body style?

They each carry their own set of issues.

I know a guy who is on his 3rd Jetta Diesel and he totally loves them.  The first was a 1988 I think that he put 550k on the body, swapped the engine out at about 350k.  The speedometer died long before the first engine.  The body was still in great shape when he traded it.  His son bought it when he lived in Indiana and had the body treated with Zebart and it didn't have any rust on it.  He traded it to Al Johnson's for a 2003 that he put about 300k on and recently traded it for a 2010.  He is totally sold on them and will tell you that as long as you keep them maintained they are great.  The first 2 were straight shift and this last one is an automatic.

Thanks every one.
Rick,
I think it is the new body style, although I haven't seen it.
He is a "new car" kinda guy so if it was the older body style, he would not be interested.
Any worries?
Thanks,
KC

k seems pretty low for a low mile jetta tdi,  make sure the timing belt has been replaced and the oil changec with the correct oil and intervals,  and no only low sulfer diesel fuel

Travis is ery correct... make sure what oil has been used.  The correct stuff brings you years of happy motoring.  The wrong stuff will bring you camshat/ rocker failures after accumulated mileage.  If it's an auto, then it's a DSG.... make sure that the services have been done on the gearbox, cause that's a chunk of change....

These are actually decent, fun to drive cars.
