1985 Joker Vanagon (diesel)

« on: October 26, 2012, 07:43:02 PM »
My boss asked me to come try to help him with a van that his uncle-in-law gave him a few years ago. He drove it up from Birmingham and parked it in the garage, but now needs to get it out to move some stuff around. We got the engine to start, but the clutch was a no-go. I called Old-Crusty, but he couldn't remember where the reservoir was (50 years of VWing and he can't remember the most recent models...). I finally found it behind the speedo- under the gauge cluster shroud). Dry! We added brake fluid and the brakes built up pressure but the clutch wouldn't. Tried bleeding a bunch, but couldn't get massive fluid movement.

I know if it were mine, I'd replace a bunch of components just to get it all to work, but seeing as its his vehicle and I'm just trying to help out, I don't want to spend unnecessarily. How can I narrow down which component is bad? Any of them have a history of going out?

You might want to try to vacuum bleed it,  if you are not getting fluid though it maybe the lines have collapsed
