Who Used to Own This Bus?

« on: July 01, 2010, 07:30:33 PM »
Does anyone recognize the bus in these pictures?  A friend of mine bought it recently.  Yesterday I noticed it had a well weathered Volks Folks sticker on the rear glass.

There was a bus like that parked at the dealer with a "pre-loved" sticker on it. I think it was Rick Swafford's.

Pretty sure it was a '69.

I think it's a 69 or 70 . . . I've slept since yesterday and can't remember for sure.  It's got a Nov. 2003 Catoosa County GA tag.  At some point someone stripped the interior of everything but the dash and front seat.  Speaking of the front seat, it's a bench seat, not a "walk-through" with bucket seats.

At some point it took a pretty nasty hit right about floor level between the wheels on the driver's side.  It has the usual rust under the windshield and the right rear corner was a little rough, but overall, it's pretty solid.  I drove it a couple of miles down the road yesterday and it runs, drives and shifts great.

Not mine... mine was a 69 Kombi, no trim... That's a deluxe model.  I swear i remember that bus though.  Probably from the Lockhart days.

Yep, it had been t-boned in the driver's side. If you look at the 3rd picture from the top, you can see the section that the current owner has cut out . . . it's wrinkled up pretty bad behind the cut out area too.  It looked like the impact was centered about floor level . . . the floor has been pulled back out somewhat, but some of the floor will also have to be cut out and replaced.

I've seen a 1950's truck this guy has brought back from the dead . . . I'm sure when he's done with it you won't be able to recongnize it.

This bus is up for sale if anyone is interested.  He's asking $1500, but I'm sure he would take a little less.  It's been two years since I saw and drove it, but it's been stored inside.  Despite the stripped out interior and a bunch of metal missing from the floor and side, this thing drove great!  Mechanically, it's ready for the road.  Needs some bodywork, but if you are fairly handy with a welder and a paint gun, I don't really think it would take much to make it look good again.

By the way, it's got a brand new (they are a couple of years old, but have less than 10 miles on them) set of tires . . . GOOD tires.  8 ply sidewalls.  This bus handles better than any bus I've ever driven.

Oh, yeah, it comes with an extra motor.  It will run, but it's probably just good for parts.  It ran out of oil and it now knocks . . . but it's complete.  And there's always a chance a set of bearings may be all it needs . . . but don't count on it for much more than a parts engine.

If you are interested, let me know and I'll put you in touch with him.  He's in GA . . . I didn't think to ask him about a title.  I can find out if that's an issue for you.  I would buy it, but I've already got Homer sitting in the yard needing some attention and costing me insurance cause I keep thinking I'll start driving him again next week.
