Trailer Project...

« on: August 20, 2010, 09:42:35 PM »
Some of you guys may weep, but really this '74 Standard was on its way to the scrap heap!  Keep in mind, it is still a work in progress!

Cool!

Do you still have the hood? If so, is it in decent shape? Someone was asking me about one a day or two back.

Sorry, the front end is complete but spoken for.  I am helping the youth pastor at my church install it in their youth room.  I will have to post another thread about that!  It is a pretty cool project.

I made some more progress on the trailer and thought I would update...

I framed in the opening, added door hardware and a floor.

I have also been prepping for some body work and rust repair.  I need to fix the area under sweetpea's windshield, so I thought that this trailer would be a good guinea pig.  It has rust and it's going Sage Green.  The trunk had been resprayed, so I took a tip from Samba about using Dawn power dissolver ($2) and sure enough, the respray came off after just a few minutes.  I got a pint of POR but don't have any experience with it so I welcome any suggestions!

What are your plan for the exposed frame. Will it be enclosed? I'm thinking.....what a great smoker rig.

there was a video they used to show on an episode of monster garage of a guy with a trike that had a beetle rear end and it was a smoker rig. In the video the dude crashed it. It was pretty crazy. I'll look for that clip

There is nothin like opening a can of Sage Green!   :o
It has been a long day so I apologize for the not so great pictures.  I finished the prep work, priming and painting today so I thought I would share my progress with you guys.  I also replaced the rear window rubber -every Samba post that said this was a 20 minute job should be ashamed.  Actually, I could probably do it faster now that I have figured it out.

Still a few things to do still, but they all seem minor to the work that I have already put in!  I need to paint the tongue and reinstall the outer flooring and the inside carpet.  Then I need to mount the fenders and run the wiring.  Cake. 8)

Everytime I see this I think "airbrake".
Then I remind myself that you will be pulling it with a Bus and I think "nevermind".

It might add drag to most "modern" vehicles, but that trailer might actually improve the aerodynamics of a bus!  8)

Try doing the window rubber with the chrome trim,  there will be some sore fingers

Funny that you mention aerodynamics.  I read  somewhere a few years ago that a Vanagon ,not a Bay window now, had better aeronamics than a 928 Porsche in wind tunnel tests in Germany.   I saw a video of this also.  ???

Very cool. All you need now is some fake tail pipes and fake oil drops to put on the ground when you park it.
