We've owned the camper for a few years now, and it has just come back from a pretty major facelift, courtesy of Don Roberson of Soddy-Daisy, TN.  Misty (who has an '01 Vortex Blue N-B) and I have taken care of the interior and made sure the fridge, stove, water, and electric all work and the plaid stays as loud as it was in '76!

I have been looking for a way to fuse VWs and racing, and what better way than to do it in a Formula Vee.  The Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) sanctions racing for these, which have been around since the mid '60s.  They are designed for road courses, and this one's logbook shows it's been on such tracks as Riverside, Portland International, and Laguna Seca.  I plan to take it to Road Atlanta, and possibly Sebring and Mid-Ohio.  Also, look for it at VW shows in the Southeast, as I've only seen one at a show in many years!  Maybe the show dates and races are always on the same weekend!

The formula is based on the Type 1 1200 motor and Type 1 transaxle (with strictly limited modifications), which are reversed in the chassis (like a 914).  It also uses the front suspension and steering box, brakes, and wheels from a Type 1.  Everything else is built by one of several chassis manufacturers.  The body is usually fiberglass, and some also have aluminum panels.  The mininum weight, with driver, is 1025 pounds, and on straightaways, they can reach speeds in excess of 125 MPH.  Wish me luck!

Definately!  SCCA requires a Snell-certified helmet, fire suit, four-point harness, arm restraints, on-board fire extinguishing system, etc., etc.

It's official, I have completed the SCCA Driver's School at Gateway Int'l Raceway in St. Louis, and I can go racing. My fast laps averaged 75 MPH, which means I was doing over 100 on the front straight.  It felt like twice as fast, but it really wasn't that tough to drive.  It was also pretty forgiving of my inexperience!  The camper, which was converted to a 4-speed, has been restored by me to an automatic.  It wasn't a fast tow for 900 total miles, but we made it!

Yep, it's not a show car, but it'll be there!  It's in the "Special Interest" class.  BTW, your Molly's looking good, Travis!
