The Beetle Camper!

« on: December 06, 2009, 11:02:50 AM »

Somewhere over 150 made in a shop in Irvine CA.

This one built after plans were published in Mechanix Illustrated Magazine (anyone have this issue?)

"Gene Bug" (builder's name was Eugene).

"Before" pic of interior. The plan's to modernize the interior with fridge, microwave, stove, DVD, lose the wood paneling, etc.! I'm looking for maybe a pop-up trailer to part out for this.

I think that is cool. - I bet it has a >40hp engine?
Can you turbo it?
KC :D
-I want to make a woody Beetle one day, probably along the same lines.

Its got a 1500 sitting in it right now. I'd like to do something with good torque, but not a turbo-charged grenade. I only want to build it once!

Hmmm. The images seem to have disappeared. Let me see what I can do.

ITS ALIVE!

I decided to start resurrecting the camper on Easter Sunday. By the second day of piddling on one thing or another I had the engine running after discovering a dirty wire connection at the capacitor. Ever wonder what causes someone to give up on an engine? No smoke and over 120 PSI compression. I may not have time between now and BP12 to get it on the road but I'm having fun playing with it. I want to replace the hydraulic brake parts before I try to move it.]

Come on man, Fred Flintstone it to bp12. You don't need no stink'in engine. It needs to be seen!

If I can hammer out my turd of a truck to get it to the show, you have no excuse Anthony.  Back to work, and we'll see you at the show, interior or not.  ;)
