Rebuilding a mk2 Gti for the wife

« on: December 13, 2012, 08:41:13 AM »
For some time now the little lady has hinted that she would like a "go fast" toy. I have had this Gti for a little while and she has expressed interest in it but wanted more grunt than the 16v could muster. She enjoys driving my mk2 but I have seats that fit me very well and since she is a ft shorter than I it doesn't fit her for frequent or longer trips.

So begins the process.

Cleaned the old 16v parts out, scrubbed and repainted the bay.

I am putting a vr6 from an 01 glx in it. Adding some schrick parts, regular maintenance nonsense

Refreshed the mk3 subframe, new poly control arms and steering rack bushings. New tie rods, wheel bearings, rotors, pads and lines.

New shift bushings in the rado box, new clutch and flywheel, diff seals ect.

All water components replaced on the engine, new chains and guides, vc gasket, intake and exhaust gaskets, plugs and wires.

A splash of paint here and there.

Front cross member w new bushings and motor mounts.

Coilovers and front and rear spindles should be installed later this week. The. It's inside to rebuild the ac/heater box, install a new pedal cluster and start wiring the engine harness into the chassis.

Sal

Front coils are hanging. Calipers and carriers are painted and ready to install once the pads arrive. (Weeks and counting)

Looks nice and clean.
Doc, I still would like to have that 1.9 diesel block you have.
Thanks,

I am waay behind on the updates.

Car is running as in it starts not drives. Finished the ac/heater core replacement dash is back in cluster is repaired, wiring for a set of oe duostyle gauges are in, looking for a non descipt  head unit these days is ridiculous. Coils are on waiting on a radiator to mount the ac condenser and the core support. Bumpers are on the way. Final adjustments and on to paint. Should be in plenty of time for a few cruises before bap.

Pictures later perhaps.
