My 65 is gone...now I have a 356!

« on: January 11, 2009, 06:08:39 PM »
Here are a couple shots of the latest project at my house.  Its a Fiber Fab wide body 356 kit.  The p.o. did a rediculous amount of work on the pan and trans mounting...now I get to finish it!   It has a type 4 engine and a 901 5 speed transaxle(a 911 trans) 4 wheel disc brakes and TONS more stuff.  I have to go through the boxes and see what all I have.  This is gonna be fun!!  Ill try to get some more photos posted soon.
Rick.

Did the engine/ tran. come from the same car ?   I think that for a very short time when Porsche was phasing out the up-right 356 engine, they used the Type-4 engine in a few of the 912 as well as the 914. If so, this would be a good thing due to having the good cyl. heads that were able to keep the valve seats where they belong.

I dont think the engine and trans are from the same car.  I looked into the numbers on the engine and it's a 1700..probably from a 411/412.  The dipstick tube is in the wrong spot for 914.  The engine is pretty much just a long block with some VERY hacked up tin in a attempt by the p.o. to convert to a upright cooling system.  I have a 1600dp bolted in right now just to get it moving but I think a  type 4 2.0 turbo will be the real power plant.   My biggest thing right now is getting it assembled and moving under it's own power.  Construction on this car started in 1988 and was never finished...I want it on the road in a month or two!   I already have a engine in and running, pedal cluster in and working, shifter, shifter tube, clutch cable, axles, brakes, lowered the rear, and most of the wiring done..The p.o. did gather up a pile of good stuff, just never put it together.  I only have a few things left before the body and pan become 1 then the rest can go in.
Here are a few more pictures.

I flipped the trailing arms today and set the torsions 2 outer clicks down.  Now the front needs some drop spindles!  With the flipped arms the camber is much better when lowered!  2 1/2 in. drop on the front will set it off! :D  I gotta save up for some wheels that don't look like they belong on a train track.
