My 61 bug

« on: February 06, 2013, 11:34:26 PM »
Since I mainly lurk here and never come to any meets, I figured I would post up my car. Having graduated and lost my job all in a short few month period I found myself with extra time on my hands. I decided that there would be no better way to spend it than to completely ruin my car and make sure that it will never be roadworthy again. I started about two weeks ago, here is the progress I've made so far.
A few beers and hours later it was consuming most of the garage

Rear pan was rusted out, I had a half pan patch panel but when I tried to weld it in the metal kept rolling back because it was too rusty. I ended up buying a whole new section from mainly foreign

Pan is completely blasted now and getting ready for some paint

Hopefully tomorrow I will get some free time and put the primer on 8)

that's a bummer. I'm still kinda halfway looking. What's the plan for the bug?

I'm also looking!!

My plan is to mildly customize it, nothing too radical. I kind of am after a "cal-look" build, I'm going to lower it a little bit and put disc brakes up front. I'll probably run single blade bumpers and window seals without the trim. The rest will mostly be stock though..

One part of the "Cal-look" I would avoid is the one piece windows that do away with the vent window.  Been there, done that . . . They look cool without the vent windows, but you'll miss 'em when they are gone!

Keep up the good work and post pictures of your progress!   8)

Oh, I don't plan on getting rid of those! I love smoker windows.

I got the pan in primer over the weekend, yesterday I spent all day cleaning the transaxle and today I am going to apply some seam seal and then hopefully spray the top coat. (Not sure how long the seam sealer has to cure before I can paint over it..I should look that up).

Oh, and I spent half of yesterday ordering parts for the car. I bought what I think are all of the bushings, mounts and brake parts I need to assemble most of the pan.

Well, my blasting cabinet has gotten a lot of use lately, unfortunately I managed to buy a bad batch of paint and now everything is at a stand still until they ship me some good stuff.

This is what the paint did when I sprayed it >:(

This is the cleanest the transaxle will ever be

Just saw this ;D
This is how it's looked lately:

Been put on the back burner but this past weekend I did start on some body work

Got some practice using the metal shrinker/stretcher, brake and Beverly shear

I know it could be better, but it's my first try at something like it and my dad was teaching me as I went

Also realized that the over-rider support holes were pretty torn up, so instead of trying to fix them I shaved them, I am using euro bumpers anyway

Started stripping the undercoating from the fenderwells. While I'm glad someone put it there (kept the car from getting much rot underneath) it's a major PITA getting off

And finally I started stripping the rest of the exterior as well. I did the roof with a DA and it took forever, I started using a stripper and it seemed to work but I haven't done much yet with it.

That's looking awesome! The rust repair is unbelievable! I would have given up by now and either scraped it, sold it or hauled it to a pro. Good work!

At this rate it will be ready right before after you retire!   ;D ;D

The car is honestly a super solid car otherwise, I blame the rust on cheap window stripping. They were aftermarket cal-look style seals and trapped water underneath them. When I bought it I thought it was more solid than half the other early cars I looked at, but I guess looks can be deceiving.  :-X

And thanks, the car may never actually get finished if I keep getting distracted by other projects.
