my 1969 ( second try )

« on: December 27, 2007, 02:13:35 PM »
here is my 1969 beetle that you will see running around from the Ooltewah area to Bonnie Oaks down Hwy 153 and amnicola Hwy to Riverside drive area where i work. Usually parked in the lot by the big river pier near the Aquarium. If you see it wave and say hello. It is in no way near the quality of a lot of the other vw's here in the forum but i enjoy it........Robert

It doesn't have to be perfect, It's all about the fun!!! I have a beater '66 that I use for my daily driver and sometimes I think it's funner to drive than my '57 chopped Oval.

I also have a 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse that is my main daily driver, but i seem to enjoy driving my bug a lot more. Even with the smell of gas and the intermediate backfireing and all the rattles and other noises. Am i the only one that feels this way? Like i said if ya see on the road wave and say hello.......Robert

I'll have to agree with Big Joe (our Yankee Brother) on the "non perfect, Beater VWs".   There are a lot more of these VWs running around in the Volks Folks clan than there are "Show Cars/Trailer Queens. Around here, sometimes the only difference is if they gave the cars/Bus a bath before a show. I like to look at show cars , but there is something about checking out a everyday unmolested original driver that has survived the rigors of time that warms the cockles of my heart. Maybe its because I remember when they were new  GEZZ !! How time flys.
Granted we now have cars that get better fuel milage, heat, A/C, faster. Not a thing wrong with that except that you had to pay 3 times or more the price to do it.  Taking off in a old Bug/Van is like comfort food or a old pair of "comfy" shoes for us old Timers and further more, my old Bugs were the only cars that had names and I could have a intelligent conversation with while on a 2 lane road trying to pass a 18 Wheeler while fighting a headwind.  You learned to play the game FUN,FUN.
This is my "Old Fart Ramblings" for today

My bug needs a name

I agree with you on looking at the daily driver beeter bugs/vans. I love to see that vw with the primered fender that will never be painted or that rust around the windows or even watching one try and drive up a long steep hill and all the other new cars are backing up behind it because the vw can not just race up the hill. I know that the owner of the vw is having a more interaining trip then those around him. Besides i have done the full restoration thing ( road stories section ) and you can see what that got me. All i need now is to get it over to Ret. Bugtech's place and have him dive it so he can help me pinpoint those few things that need tweeking.. :D
I also need to come up with a name for it so if any one wants to throw one out there go for it and we will see what we can come up with.......Robert

I haven't met your Bug.  We can't name your Bug for you. Only you can do that. It will tell you when the time comes . They are all "Critters or Varmits" to me until I'm told otherwise

David, You said it all a couple of posts up. There's nothing like driving to work at 6:30am in the morning, -5 below Zero, and you look over in the other lane to someone who honks at you and gives you a thumbs up at you driving this old ass VW to work!!!

It is kind'a fun.  The only part I didn't like was having to scrape the ice off the inside of the windows and my glasses to see who was yelling/honking at me.     and it was sort of
fun to drive by some poor soul in the famly Chevy sitting on the side of the road belching out more steam than the boiler room of the Queen Mary

So far I have not had to do any scraping. Pull out of a garage that is at 50 degrees helps!

Yep !     Pulling out of a 50 degree garage is nice, but its sort of like the old drunk trying crawl out into moring sunlight with a head as big as a Mars thinking that this is going to best I'll feel and its down hill for the rest of the day. Thats the way Bugs are. Leave at 50 degrees, arrive at 40 degrees

have never met Homer before but have seen him on the road. Thanks for saying good things about the old 69. It will stay this way till i can get moved into a house with a garage and then it gets pulled apart and done right. At least thats the idea unless i can find a bus to redo and then sell the bug.......Robert

Here in this COLD weather (yes, it's cold today...18 degrees this morning!) I'm glad that my driveway is on a hill.  The old battery cannot start Oscar, so I simply roll start down the driveway.
Note to self...new battery in the future.

Ah the feel of the " Real Cold " of the midwest. I remember it well as a child in a small Iowa town and what did i do after growing up in Chattanooga tennessee? I moved back for 5 years and bought a house (still own it), butmoved back down here. I remember one week where the high did not get above 0 degrees with a wind chill one night of -62 below zero.  Also i laughed at stoping at a steet light and having your warm tires instantly freezing to the pavement. Well that is some of my favorite cold stories. Oh also havig to plug in your car at night so your oil does not freeze solid....... .......Robert
