Found out today that patching the driver's side heater channel is out of the question.  Full replacement is in order.  After replacing the passenger side heater channel, I am still having a problem with the door dropping after it opens.  Not sure how to fix that.

Rick...the only unfortunate thing about this car is that when it was repainted, it had some bubbled up paint.  Well, someone popped all of the bubbles and then painted it.  Did nothing about the pitting metal underneath.  Doesn't matter to me because I plan on driving it the way it is.  I just want something I can drive.
Lets get with the program and "Gitter Done" then and quit wasting time trying to make a living for crying out loud.

If you would like to babysit a 16 month old for about a week or so, I will bring him your way.  This way I can justify working non-stop on my car and not helping to parent my child.  Don't forget that you are not getting younger and are already twice my age.

Heck !!  Go ahead and bring the little rug Rat over. I'll just put him outside and let him graze and bring him in at night.  When that Boy gets a few years older you will find that your age double overnight . My hair turned gray and yours turned loose but look at this way you are just gaining face with the VW crowd.

I have replaced both heater channels and the luggage tray.  I have one patch panel to replace the rusted out driver side quarter and I should be pretty much done with the body (for now).  I am heading towards being done by the end of the month.  Getting new tires tomorrow.  Decided on 135/15 for the front, Coker was out of the 145R15, and 165R15 in the rear.  About to rebuild the carb as it is probably gummed up from the 2-3 years of sitting and the horrible smelling fuel that was in the tank.  I will post some pics here in a few days or so.

There are some vehicles that just do not look good with a chopped top.  VW's are one of them in my opinion.  However, fenderless VW rat rods can look good with a chopped top.

No pictures, but I now have new tires and got the wheels mounted.  I also installed the transaxle and engine yesterday.  Hopefully I will have the body mounted this week.  I am looking foward to actually driving a VW to the cruise-in in March.

Most of the time, that's very true.  99.9% of the chopped top Bugs I've seen look like real hack jobs.  However, a guy I used to work with chopped the top on a 74 Beetle and put 2" wider fenders on it and when he got finished, it looked factory.  He didn't just cut the pillers and bend the top down like most of them are done, he cut the top into about 9 sections, and using an extra roof, he made the top wider and longer so it fit without bending the pillars in or back.  he even shortened the window frame section of the doors instead of cutting them off . . . he went as far as resizing the vent windows.  Like I said, it looked like it had left the factory that way.

Then, he lost interest in it and after it sat with 99% of the body work complete for over 10 years, he brought it to Bug-A-Palzua 4 or 5 years ago and sold it for next to nothing.  I have no idea who bought it and I haven't seen it since.  Hopefully it'll turn up at a show completed some day . . .

If he did it the way you said, then he did it the right way.  Most people think you just cut the pillers, remove how much you want it chopped, and weld it up.  A real chop top consists of a minimum of two roofs and multiple cuts.

Years ago, Hot VWs actually had a tech article on how to properly chop a top on a beetle.  The cuts they made throughout the roof of that thing made the seems look like a patchwork quilt.

The end result was pretty darned nice.

Looking good but watch out for low flying "Possums" and manhole covers. Be sure you have your seat belts working. I would hate to see you sliding your butt off the seat every time you put the brakes on.  Heck the car might be faster now seeing how its going down hill all the time.
