My "New" '70 Bug

« on: November 19, 2009, 01:20:47 PM »
Just purchased this 1970 Bug here locally.  Runs but could run a little bit better.  Has some heater channel and luggage tray rot but will hopefully be on the road in a few months.

Thanks.  It's one of those "been in the family since new".  Has the horrible smell of old gas which may be why it runs with a miss. Everything is original except for the paint and an engine replacement in the 80's.  Has owners manual, jack and tools.

That is exactly what I plan on doing.  Looks like I may be able to just patch the driver side but will most likely have to do a complete replacement on the passenger side.  When I have time, I'm gonna head down to Alvin's in Dalton where he said he would sell me some out of a body there for $25 per side.  I also found out that the luggage tray was rotted out so I will have to replace it.  The previous owner (purchaser's son in law) gave me a folder today of extensive maintenence records including some of his own handwritten accounts of what was done down to when he applied 3 coats of wax to it.

The car was originally purchased from Taurus Volkswagen Company in  Atlanta, GA on July 24, 1970.  The only unfortunate thing is that the car had air condititioning but the original owner paid to have the under dash part and condenser as well as the compressor removed.

My plan is to remove the body and place it along with the seats and engine on the pan that I have recently restored.

No great loss on the A/C.   They never worked all the time and it made engines very hard to service much less killing them early on. You could be doing about 40 mph, turn on the A/C and right away you would be looking for 3rd gear and on the highway 80 mph down to about 60-65 mph max. The whole system was Mickey Mouse. A big tub of ice and a "imported" slave with Palm bough's would be a better rig

Well I figured it was time to post some more photos of the '70.  These are mainly random photos I have taken.  Most are of the rust issues with the car.  I will be finalizing the heater channel install tomorrow and and working hard to get it on the road.  I did build a luggage tray to replace the rusted out one.  It is probably not that pretty to most, but it will do the job and will be covered with carpet.

-you '72 hater!
You must hate the steering wheel and the 1" longer rear window, 'cause that is the only difference in a 71 and 72.
LOL,

Found out today that patching the driver's side heater channel is out of the question.  Full replacement is in order.  After replacing the passenger side heater channel, I am still having a problem with the door dropping after it opens.  Not sure how to fix that.

Rick...the only unfortunate thing about this car is that when it was repainted, it had some bubbled up paint.  Well, someone popped all of the bubbles and then painted it.  Did nothing about the pitting metal underneath.  Doesn't matter to me because I plan on driving it the way it is.  I just want something I can drive.

Other possible causes on the dropping door... worn hinge pins, flexing in the lower a-pillar.  They sell replacement sections that will replace just the hinge mounting point.

Lets get with the program and "Gitter Done" then and quit wasting time trying to make a living for crying out loud.
