Introducing "Lucky" - A True Survivor

« on: August 31, 2004, 12:14:34 AM »
When I pulled in the driveway this evening I realized that the bus I bought from Joe's Recycling is a survivor.  Yep, that's the original paint, trim, headliner, interior pannels, floor mats, nose emblem, ect.  All just as they were installed in Germany some 40 years ago . . . except for the wear and tear of 40 years of weather and driving . . . and a couple of hours of abuse by some dumb*** with a sawsall and welder.  Or, maybe this was that rare factory installed "Baja Bus" option?

Considering it's over 40 and has been used as a trash bin for years, the interior, especially the original headliner and rubber floor mats, are in decent shape.

Lucky's Rear

Meet Lucky.  Lucky I had one spot left in the driveway and I caught a glimps of it sitting on the lot of Joe's Recycling.  It was within a couple of hours of being crushed.

More Pictures of Lucky.

Just remember . . . Polyester Leisure Suites and Platform shoes were "cool" back in the 70's!

How to add ground clearance to your Splitty . . . or maybe how NOT to add clearnace . . .

The rare "Baja Bus" front end option you think?

WOW !!!!!!!  Its not often that a Baja option type 2 makes its presents known to the world and with its abundants of original heavy duty  patina, indeed makes this a classic survivor. I really do like the optional front air brakes also. Could it be that Zen is going to put this classic back on the re- ro---------- ?    Is Homer going to have a room mate ?  Will they play together ?   Will they go on trips together ?  Stay Tuned !!!!   :)

A little bondo here, a touch of paint there, a few turns of the ratchet, couple gallons of tequila, and a daisy sticker and you should be set! :hippy2:  :thumbs-up:

I was reading about some "alternative" uses for POR-15 on their web site.  It seems that they now make clear POR-15.  It can be used for anything that you would use regular POR-15 on, but they also say that it makes a fantastic alternitive to fiberglass resin.  Not only can you use it straight out of the can with no mixing, once it dries it resist a lot of chemicals that will soften traditional resins.  Soooooooo . . . if it bonds to rust and permanantly seals it . . . and it makes excellent fiberglass resin . . . and it's clear . . .  hummmmmm . . .

How hard would it be to pull off all the trim, hammer out the major dents into minor ones, clean it good, treat all the rust with clear POR-15 and patch all of the rust holes with sheets of POR-15 soaked fiberglass cloth?  Straighen out the bent trim, put it back on and, TA-DA! . . . good as ne. . . er . . . ahhh . . . as it is now.  But permanantly that way.  Oh, weight, POR-15 needs to be protected from sunlight.  So, I guess I would have to paint all the POR-15 treated areas with rust-colored paint.

The Baja front end option has to go . . . or I'll have to buy a stepladder one.  Haven't really decided which one.  I could weld in some new metal in the wheel wells, but I think that would take away from it . . . I could just leave the front end the way it is and put big enough tires on the back to level it up.  Wha-da-ya think? :-k

NO,NO Herb, I think Zen should raise the back up as high as the front. Just think, He could clear 747`s , Bugs, cattle, install heater boxes and replace oil drain plugs without bending over.  Also fires are not easy to set off in rarified air. GO LUCKY THE RAT BUS !!!!!!!!

If I keep the front end where it is, I'm going to have to extend the steering column.  However did this took it loose at the dash and pulled it down through the floor.  The problem with that is that it isn't supported at the dash any more and the steering wheel is almost sitting in the seat.
