What's the best way to get fire extinguisher powder out of the engine compartment? And what has everyone else done to replace the black coil wire after it got a little too warm? Mine only lost the insulation on the last two inches so I might just wrap it, but I don't know yet... I kinda stablized it and walked away.

I headed over the my folks house to help my brother in law with his trooper that is occupying the lift I wanted to use. He was busy changing out the filter and fluid on the transmission so I pulled out the old FJ40 my dad and I went through when I was a kid. After charging the battery, I let the fuel pump build up pressure and it started right up. I had to bleed the clutch slave cylinder and she was running. Checked everything out and took it for fresh gas. Since it hadn't been registered in since last april, I swung by the emissions place (its a '75) and got it tested. FAILED. Then died. Then wouldn't start again. I broke down in the parking lot at the emissions testing. Dad came and got me and to tow barred it home. We tuned it up and reset the points that had closed up and she runs good now.

Between the sore tooth, the engine fire and breaking down at the emissions testing place, I had kind of a bum day. I wanted to swap transmissions but didn't get a chance to... Oh well...

Harness Verses splice or tape ?   Sounds like a no-brainer as long as you have enough wire to " getta holt of"

Nick, I'd just go ahead and splice in a new section of wire, using butt connectors, wire, and female ends... don't just wrap it.  That's a good way to get home, but I'd patch it up a little better than that.  I have made more than one harness from the firewall rearward in my day.   ;)

Finally got around to pulling the engine last night. Doesn't look too bad. I have some cleaning up to do and maybe just a few inches of wire to replace. The condenser wire and plug wires had the most damage. New fuel lines are needed as well. Oh.. and the vacuum advance canister... the one that I repaired... had the nipple break off when I was pulling the motor... So I guess I need to replace or repair it again...

Its never ending!!!

While organizing crap in my basement, I came across a CD titled "VW Pics Fall 2006" that I had burned back when. Thought I'd post up some photos of how I got her.

This is how my old baja started out!

So this is proof that the vacuum hose was hooked up to the retard (  ;D ) port. This is before the seats were recovered and the disc brakes but after the floor pans. I got her on Labor Day weekend in 2006 and these were around mid October same year. I had to come home on the weekends from school to do the work, so it was slow going. Thought it was fun finding the old photos. Hope ya'll enjoyed!

I finally got around to doing some maintenance on Bonnie this week. I finished a tune up that I had started a few weeks back. Finally got the oil changed. I got to looking at some other issues I've had lately with her which included the gas gage not working, the fuel door cable broke, the radio crapped out and the dome light was out.

I started with the dome light- I had apparently wired it up backwards last time I had it out. The bulb was dead and the door switch had given out. I swapped the switches from drivers to passenger and cleaned up the broken one. It works again.

I somehow got the battery cables a while ago and the gas gage never worked since. Awhile a go, I replaced the sending unit because it wasn't showing varying resistance. Nope. Tried different vibrators on the back a few weeks ago. Nope. I needed a fuel gage off a speedo. I couldn't find a late one in my stash, but then I was going through a box of wire and found one! I swapped it and it works. No more carrying an extra gallon of gas in the trunk.

I went to replace my fuel door release handle because the loop was broken. It twisted the whole cable off at the end, so I removed the whole thing and bought one off the samba. It was the wrong one. Then I found one at the Decatur show for $5. Bought it and it fit perfectly. New handle is installed.

Radio- Bonnie has never been kind to radios. My first one crapped out because water leaked in and ruined the radio. I replaced the windshield seal and double checked everything. This was when she lived at UTK and spent her time outside. The radio got rebuilt by the mfr, but it wasn't quite right and got wet shortly after. I got another radio and keep a plastic bag over it to keep water off of it. It lasted a while, but when Megan and I stated dating, we took Bonnie to the Tail of the Dragon and got a quick rain shower on the way back- smoke from the dash! I pulled the wires and it lost the front left speaker but otherwise worked fine after that. Then I went to the trophy assembly part this past spring and it gave out. I let it dry out like normal, but the radio just buzzed when it was turned on. I pulled the terminal off the fuse block. I found one just like mine on eBay for $5 so I ordered it. It didn't work, but came with a cheap one that does. Tonight I finally got to take the two similar ones apart. Water damage everywhere. I disassembled down to the board and resoldered the board connections and reassembled. IT WORKS!!! I even tried the burned out channel to the front left- that worked too! I danced a jig.
