73 Karmann Ghia

« on: December 18, 2009, 01:55:26 PM »
O.K., so let's cover a few bases here....

The following are all facts:

- I am a lover of Air - cooled VWs.
- I have owned buses and beetles, early and late.  I won't say how many.
- I have ALWAYS wanted a type 1 Karmann Ghia
- I am cheap, and as such, my cars are often a bit on the rough side.
- I have searched for a Ghia for years, but rust buckets run over $2000
- I am cheap.
- Parts for Ghias are not.
- I basically wanted an intact car for a parted out price.
- I am cheap.  No, really cheap.
As such, my life has had a void... untill the other day when KC placed the sale ad on here for the Ghia he needed out of his yard so that he might not incurr the wrath of his loving spouse with the impending arrival of his new Westy (and a pretty cool one at that).  It seemed like the perfect opportunity to help out a fellow human being.  Then I saw the car for myself, and couldn't get the money in his hands fast enough.  It's later than anything i would normally go for, but the price was right, so it's mine.
Pics when i towed it to the shop.  eeeewwwww it needed a bath BAD.

OG color is Ravenna Green.  They used it for 1973 and the couple months of th 74 model year.  The pics of it cleaned up look more yellow than it is.  One article i read, the guy described it as "electric chartreuse".... my thoughts exactly.  They also used the same colr on some Porsche 914s.  The interior was trashed, but all there, and the body has very little rot, and what's there is pretty easy stuff to fix.  one minor repair on the right rear fender, and the prerequisite Ghia nose repair.

And now, the pics of the 30 minute scrubbing it received from some Purple Power soak-down....

This should be one of the easier builds i have done.  It's a big bumper, "fat chick" Ghia.  As such, the cool factor is seemingly reduced, so i don't think i'll try to mess with that.  Basically, fix the rot, replace the pans, clean up, paint the jambs, trunk, and engine compartment, refurbish the interior, fix the mechanicals, put in an engine,  and roll it as-is for now.  The body is in really good shape, and the paint was re-sprayed a long time ago, but looks pretty good.  I figured I will fix dents and dings as time goes on, but drive it while i do so.  I needed this car pretty bad to cure my air-cooled withdrawls so i can pace myself and do my other ride up the right way.

And, most importantly, the color is absolutely the sickest i have ever seen on a car.

There, I said it....

How close is the Clark lift green?

It even looks better than I thought it would!

Wanna wash my bus next?

Yes, it is a sick color, though you'll probably never see another one on the road...

KC out - glad you like it.

My uncle was a salesman at Hailey Porsche/Audi in the 70's. I'm pretty sure one of his demo's was a 914 in this color. I kept it a secret but I actually liked it (I was jacked-up on more than Mountain Dew back then, though). Okay, I still like it and I'm only jacked-up on Master Blend.

His name is John Langford. He must have been a killer salesman because he crashed a 914/6 and wasn't fired! Speaking of Ghia's, does "low-light" mean the location of the turn signal?

"low light" refers to the early cars where the headlamps are positioned lower.  I believe it's like 1958 or older cars that it refers to.

If they're still there, someone in Jasper, GA had two '74(?) Ghia's listed on the Samba for less than $1,000.00. It seems like one of them was pretty solid and at least one had an engine.

Dude,
I found a large piece of your ghia's interior in my shed.
It appears that it is the fold down part in the back.
Let me know and I can meet you again.
