How much did you take off the tunnel?
I took out 1.25in. anymore would cause problems with steering column angle and master cylinder clearance. As it is the rag joint will probably have a shortened life :-\ may end up having to install at least 1 universal joint but it works very smoothly with no binding, just a little more flexing of the rag than factory. It also pushes the column back towards the driver about 1in.  I could have trimmed the steering shaft and put it in the original spot, but it's not that big of a deal for me...I'm tall ;D 8)

I took the shifter section of a junk tunnel and trimmed it up for a exposed shift rod set up. If I did a 2in trans raise I could have kept the shift rod in the tunnel with a Bus nose cone swap but I really wanted to go 3in...I guess we will see if the added inch was worth the added work..

Because the trans is 3in higher, the shifter needs to be too, with the Bug nose cone it puts the shift rod about 1in above the tunnel. Original shift rods are NOT straight, they have a bend for at least 2 million reasons if the internet is to be believed ;) so I made my own.

you can also see that the brake lever had to be cut off as well because the shift rod needed that spot ;D

Here is another shot, you can see the hockey stick ABOVE the shift rod coupler hole instead of in it.
you can also see how straight the axle tubes are even though it's been lowered 6in+
Because shift rods have shift rod bushings that need to be changed from time to time, I made my shift rod 2 pieces so it can be removed with the body on. I used a combo of early Bus and Beetle rods. More on that later...Another issue with a trans raise is exhaust. Naturally if the engine is up 3in so is the exhaust and that just won't work.
Again there is a few ways to deal with this, I just lowered the muffler. Installed modded J pipes and made some extended pipes for the muffler to head and manifold crossover. I chopped a pile of pie cut pipe and welded everything up, doing it this way the angle could be made pretty sharp without taking up too much space.

Here is the body back on with pea shooters in place.

Having a lift is great for mock up and fab work, really makes it a lot easier to pull the body, make something on the pan and set the body back down to check fitment and function! 8)

I ended up moving the park brake lever over just enough to clear the shift rod, I had thought of making another extended mount point and bring the brake above the shift rod but in the end this was simpler and seems to work well. In the next two pic's you can see the brake handle and also the spot the shift rod is bolted together. I wanted a nice short section to deal with, makes it easy to take apart.



Before bolting the body on the pan I replaced the master cylinder, wheel cylinders. brake shoes, rubber hoses and steel lines. This is WAY easier with the body off! ;) Once the body was bolted tightly down to the pan the next step was intalling the windshield.  I wanted to get the windshield in before the steering column cause it would be much easier with that out of the way. If I had more time I probably would have installed all the glass with the body off, would have been able to lower the body on the lift to the perfect height for standing in. 8)

The windshield has some scratches from the wiper blade on the drivers side so I flipped it over and put those on the inside infront of the passenger. Hopefully I will be able to buff them out because they will no doubt make me insane if they stay. I can put up with all kinds of messed up crap on a vehicle, but a jacked up windshield or lights that don't work push me over the edge! :P  I put the doors back together with parts from 3 other doors and a rubber kit from CIP1. I must say that building doors is about a PITA! Everything goes together in a specific order and the new rubber is not a perfect fit...and if you don't know both of those things when you start..you will probably invent a new language that consists of nothing but curse words and maniacal laughter followed closely by throwing everything within reach and ends with a grown man sobbing in the fetal position on a dirty shop floor! Ask me how I know :P ::)  OK, it wasn't THAT bad but it was pretty tough. ;D

This is what it looked like when I left work on Tuesday. I did get the wheels painted and the 145/65's mounted, wiper motor and blades mounted, front seats, bumpers running boards, rear view mirror and matching Schlitz beer can. I found it years ago below the dam by my Grandmothers house, had to be sitting in that spot forever! I also hung the headlights and a few other small things. I still have to work out the wiring and fuel hoses, and engine lid mounting, then on the road it goes!!

Looking good. I was wondering what you did to raise the  shift rod. All has been revealed thanks to your pics. Your only mistake was :  CIP1. Boy !! You must have really wanted a Rat Rod to subject yourself to all that bodily and mental abuse. Over the nearly 50 years of putting up with my dealings with my favorite "Lil' Critter" I to have learned many new languages plus a few I invented.  But as the old country boy said  "you went and done it".  All you need now is my big old metal Sterling Beer ice chest . ;D ;D ;D

Yeah, Cip1....you get what you pay for...apparently I paid for a pain in the ass! ;D I really do like building this stuff, I just don't really have the time to tackle a big project like this. This one will probably be the last major build for me for quite some time.

I don't mind cip1 but they take a while to ship. They usually have the same parts as most vendors and they are pretty cheap- cheaper than MAM. I usually order from CIP1 every now and then but its never for parts I need immediately, just usually a general order about once a year when I have enough to qualify for free shipping

Yeah their shipping is terrible, takes forever and always some sort of damage.  This time was no different, the box that the scrapers came in was crushed.  At least everything in the box was ok, more than I can say for the sheet metal parts I ordered from them a few years ago.  Everything was the standard Brazil quality except the wheather strip, I opted for the German rubber there! ;) I'm sure WW would have been better quality hands down but I'm way too cheap for that right now. ;D So I can't complain too much, got what I specifically asked for.

Man-o-Man you got that right!! Ice chest full-o-beer  and for me no mig=no car! If it can't be fixed with a mig welder it's not broke all the way yet ;D 8)

Thanks! Come on by, I probably won't be back for another week but then I'll be back for good. I have some early rear fenders you may be interested in, they are far from perfect but a good start.  No decklid or apron though. I may have a early rear bumper too, can't remember. ???
