1989 Jetta Diesel

Just got my first water-cooled Volkswagen...an '89 diesel Jetta. I bought it from Steve Smith down in Braselton, GA, the same guy I bought my bus from as well.

vwherb, along with Ret.Bugtech and I went down to look at it last Wednesday and the car's in great shape: new paint (the color is from a 1997 Passat), new bumpers off a '91 Jetta, clean, and of course it cranks up and runs great. It's got a 5-speed manual transmission in it (What do I do with that 5th gear?) and Steve has done a lot to the engine to make it road-worthy. I'll get to go pick it up later this week.

By the way, Steve Smith is a great guy to deal with. His shop has all kinds of VWs and Porsches sitting outside, it's always fun to visit. It's about a 2-1/2 hour drive down there, but it's worth the trip. Check out his website at http://www.theautobahnsociety.com.

Russ, Its a "no brainer" what you do with 5th gear. This will allow you to out run Kyle so he will not be able to "poke" around under your hood to see if he can use anything to "enhance" the performance of his Vanagonagon

It's home! We brought it home late last night, cleaned it up a little today. And I took some pictures: http://gallery.lostorbit.co.uk/view_album.php?set_albumName=jetta

It would not be a pretty sight. OK pop quiz : What was the first thing I told you to do?  Quickly Now !! ----------------------------I`m still waiting   :?:

Alignment...Steve fixed a little bit of the toe-in on the driver's side when he replaced the brake pads, but it still pulls to the right ever so slightly. I need to find a good alignment shop, preferably in NWGA.

Russ,

Try Doyles alignment on Cross Street between 2A and Cloud Springs Road.  They are VERY reasonable and have done a great job on the Beetles and Super Beetles I've taken there.
