1986 Golf Diesel

« on: August 17, 2013, 01:59:28 AM »
Despite my better judgement, I picked one up earlier today and drove it home. Needs shifter bushings and maybe something with the brake booster and a lot of TLC and cleaning up. Also need to order a window regulator and some door handles (3 of the 4 don't work well.

Looks to be a decent car, mostly original paint, except for the hood and back right door. Has two dents, one in front right door, one in back right door. They aren't bad and might just pop back out mostly, without much work.

Not sure exactly what I want to do with it, keep it, flip or whatever. I am sure I will have lots of questions, so bear with me. Any good sites for parts?

I think its going to be fun; I finally understand the "where air meets water logo." I'm not sure Megan does. She finally said, "ok, for real, you aren't getting a Dasher now." Sorry Zen...

Nick, about 10 years ago I bought an 86 Golf from a lady in Hixon. She had a renter that moved out and left it behind and owed her a couple of months rent.  He sent her the title, but it was not signed and was in the name of one of his friends that had been killed in wreck a few years before.  I think I gave $100 bucks for it.  After checking into it, it was going to be WAY too much hassle and money to get the title straightened out so I stripped it, sold a bunch of stuff off of it and sold the rest for scrap.  I ended up making a few hundred dollars on it.  There are a few parts from it that I never sold . . . SOMEWHERE in my garage, I should still have all 4 window regulators.  The worked good when I pulled them out, but I have no use for them.  I'll dig around and see if I can locate them.

That would be awesome! I really need door handles and window regulators. Probably need a drivers door handle before the regulator because it helps to push the window down first before reaching in and opening the door from the inside- Megan is so happy...

Door handles - I personally feel like the stock ones stink. They are difficult to get adjusted right to where they will open easily with one hand.

ECS sells these newer pull-style handles that fit Mk2s: http://www.ecstuning.com/News/ECS_MKII_DoorHandles/

Supposedly, they are the same door handles VW puts on the Chinese Mk2. All I know is they work a lot better for me. I bought them for my Jetta and moved them over to the Rabbit when I bought that and they have worked fine ever since. But eek, $65 for door handles? Sure would be nice to get them cheaper.

Well the good news is, you can. Here's a link to the same eBay auction where I purchased for $38 with free shipping (directly from China):

http://www.ebay.com/itm/180600393425?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

They appear to be identical in every way to the ones ECS sells. I'm pretty happy with them, I can open all four doors on my Rabbit up easily. You are welcome to check them out yourself on my car.

I don't have any door handles. Three were broken and one was missing when I got the car.   ???  For all of their "German Engineering" VW seems to have sucked at designing door handles after 1979.  Maybe the newer ones are better, but every VW I've had any dealings with that was built between 1980 and 2000 had door handle problems.  I've put 2 used and 3 new OEM handles on the driver's door of our '96 Passat.  The only water-cooled VW I've ever had that didn't have door handle problems was my '79 Dasher.  All 4 original door handles still work great on it . . . and they look very much like the ones that were on the '86 Golf.

I ordered door handles and a window regulator from mainly foreign today. They were comparable in price but the main thing he said was that the parts would be here Monday. I picked up the shifter bushing set that he had in stock. Still need to figure out how to put those in...

I got to cleaning it out and putting pieces back in their place. The radio ended up working. I started washing all the door panels and the seats. The front seats are going to need some deep cleaning.

Nick, I've tried to look at the picture you posted 5 times . . . every time, the blood has rushed to my head and I've passed out.  I finally figured out it's easier to flip a picture over than it is for an old fat man to stand on his head.   ;D

Shifter bushings in. I have reverse gear now! 5th gear has a notch but it acts like neutral. Need to figure that out any ideas?

Do the dip stick tubes have an o-ring at the bottom of them? It appears to be leaking oil out of the base of the dipstick.
