Funny you should ask... I actually got an inside good deal and my contact said they had 5 185s and 5 195s. I only got 4 185s cause I don't plan on getting a flat! He said it was rare for them to have them and they must have bought a container that happened to have some. Anyhow, he said for me to spread the word on the 195s. They would be around $100 each I believe. I got them at Coker Tire and I can check on a contact person for you, if you want?

So I've been working on the brakes lately and I finally got around to working on the rears today. I've taken everything out from the hardlines out and have been replacing them. The fronts went together really smoothly and I'm happy with them. The rears looked like they were going well until I went to put the drums on. They would not get flush on the hub and ended up binding up on the backing plate before they'd flush up. I tried pulling them in with the two bolts but that didn't help. Any ideas?

Now I will say that had to get "new" backing plates because mine had rust issues so I got some off a 76 at pull-a-part. The drums are new. But my understanding is that all the drums and backing plates are the same from 71-79.

Help!!!

(I also got the tires mounted! this thing will be rolling as soon as I get the brake rub fixed!!!)

I don't know the "official" production breaks on the rear brakes, but, while they did use Basically the same set-up, I know for a fact that the brake shoes changed 3 or more times from 71-79.  I know that the alignment pins and hardware mounted differently, so i assume that the backing plates were different?   ???

I know this after getting two sets of wrong rear brakes for a '72 we had at the shop a while back before the third try that revealed the correct ones.

The differences are subtle, but they are different.  Again, i don't know for sure about the backing plates though.

According to busdepot the difference in brake shoes were in dec of 72.

I guess I'll have to spend some more time tinkering with it. I'll try installing the old pads and drums just to see if they fit with the "new" backing plates. Then replacing each part one at a time to see whats causing the rub.

I just hope the tornadoes don't blow Penelope off her jack stands  :-\

Megan and I went out to do a little shopping today and I found the perfect Orange Westy Shirt. Its a lovely matching orange plaid Ralph Lauren Polo! It was also on sale!!! I wonder why they were on sale? Wouldn't everyone want a knit shirt to match a 1970s VW interior!?!?!?

I got her engine in and running pretty goood it is still stumbling on acceleration, but its having trouble staying in 1st. The shifter is pretty sloppy and hard to shift so I have been anticipating replacing the shift coupler but this new problem seems like the ever dreaded shifter popping out of gear problem. I can try to hold it in first but it pops like a CV (repeatedly and loudly) and grinds while I try to hold it in. I don't know if its the coupler slop not letting it fully engage and therefore it is popping out or if it is fully engaging and the syncros have seen better days.

Anyone have any advice?

Also, I cleaned out alot of the insides (I had to put alot of the stuff back in her because of the rain, but she's gonna be fun if the trans holds up). Went by the statefarm office today too. Looks like its going to be ~$26/ month for liability or ~$30/month for full coverage (collision and comp)....I think I'm going to go for the full coverage!
