1972 AutoStick Unstuck!

« on: March 05, 2008, 11:10:20 PM »
Here are a few photos of the 1972 AStick I got back in December.  Looks like its all original, 86K on ODO. I have new bumpers for it, just gotta get some bumper bolts and clean up the original mounts.
More later...

I added the Empi 8 spokes

Has original cardboard liner and gas tank...

Gotta get a new windscreen and seal...

New Carb

I'm looking at your vacumn hoses.  Your carb is not for a auto-stick,but not to fear.  The vacumn line on the backside of the dist is for vacumn retard. (early emission control) Block that one off . You can leave the port open on the vac.unit. Take the vac.hose from the "shift solinoid and plug it on the front of the carb. This may help smooth out some shifting. The vac.hose from the front of the vac. unit to the side of the carb is correct.  Re-check your timing. I'm sure it moved.
Be sure to block off the port on the intake manifold. If all this doesn't help anything, put it back like it was and blame it on the non-auto-stick carb.

I apreciate it,
I'll do the plumbing changes tommorow or Saterday.
The P.O. bought this carb from a place out in California.
Thanks for all the help.
A guy down the street from me is an old time VW nut who doesnt seem to do any thing but work now.  He used to do alot of restorations and things down in FL, he brought all his stuff up when he retired from the Navy in the early 90's, He has a set of pop outs, an OEM (used) VW muffler and some other things that I think I need.  I am going to drive down the Bug to his house and put it on a lift this weekend and address the muffler issue.  I can get a good OEM VW muffler from him for $50 and Use his lift to put it on  :D  :D  :D - score.  He is a great guy and has a really nice SB convertable that someone decided to total for him.  He has purchased another body and is in the process of swapping over the parts.  He doesn't get on the computer that much, but is a great guy.  He said that he hasn't been active in a VW-Club since Fl.
I am trying to get him to check out the site because you guys all seem genuine, like a family - I appreciate all the patience / knowledge that I see comming from the members. :)
Thanks for all the help.

Your Buddy down the street would be more than welcomed. Its always nice to have new blood with some savy to jump in here. You never know when you might learn a new trick or so. I was a pro- VW mech. for over 45 years and I learn something new just about everyday about our little "Critters".

Thanks again!
Re-plumbed the vaccume lines as per instructions and I can say that it does shift much better and not so hard.  Didn't have time to re-time, (hey it was snowing and 38 deg....) any way I am soooo excited about getting the ASBug running again...
I just bit the bullet and bought the massive $7 36mm socket and (read hard here) broke loose the back nuts.  They felt like they had been on since at least 1987...  Haven't bulled drums yet, but sprayed brake cleaner into all the stud holes and freed up the drag that was on the back wheels.
Now for the questions:
-should I just go ahead and replace the rubber hoses, even if they are not leaking and so not appear to be cracking on the outside.  (My 1972 Honda's rubber lines are starting to crack on the outside...)  If so, should I go with the SS or just the good old rubber, the Rubber are abt. $12 each, and a kit of SS ones are $60.  Is it worth it?
Thanks,
KC

A strange thing about original VW brake hoses. They don't have to look bad or cracked  up to be a problem. Most of them collapse on the inside and can look great . As far as to use S.S. instead of rubber, I can't justifiy the cost of S.S.   If you look closely you will more than likey find that your hoses are the original ones and have been on the car since '72. Does that tell you anything ?   Nothing wrong with stainless except the cost. If you go with rubber, make sure to stick to the good "stuff' and use high quality brake fluid.
Yes ,I would replace the hoses and anything else that might make you a little uneasy and be done with it.
Hey !! Its just money     Leaving 4 black skid marks instead of trying to move that Kenworth out of the way gives me a  warm fuzzy feeling all over.

Went ahead and pulled the engine to fix the leaky push rod tubes, and to put in two new exhaust studs... Those buggers (or is it Boogers?) wouldn't move.... (Yes bugtech, I know you said so!)  Ever seen anyone weld on nuts with a mig on a Magnesium block - I hadn't, but my friend did a good job.
The car is currently getting new seals put all over the engine, new push rod tubes, new brakes, and a GREAT NEW German muffler put on!! The mufler is marked JL with some kind of square symbol in between the JL.
Still had all the plugs in the ports.....going to try and get it back before the BAPX show!
I've been driving the '72 Honda Z for a few days and I am hankering for the ASBug to be free to roll.

Any one know a Honda Nut?  My Z is one of only 14,000 ever made and is quite rare.  I am looking to sell so as to buy a '67 bug I have found.

Take Care,
KC

Just to let you know that the international class is for VW's that we originally didn't get in the States like the Mexican Beetle, Fridolins, Pointers, Isis, etc.

Here's the description from B-a-P show class list:
"International Class - All Years, Air or Water Cooled. VWs not built for the US Market including, but not limited to Mexican Beetles, Fridolins, Isis, etc. Excludes Notchbacks and Type 3 Ghias (they will be judged in the Type 3 class)."

That is the only Honda that I like and or would drive though. They are neat little cars.
