1964 Bus... progress being made

« on: March 23, 2009, 10:08:37 PM »
Actually, not really new, I picked this one up a while back, but the weather has been generally sucking, so what time i've had has been eaten up with other people's toys.... now it's my turn, should be in the garage by this next month.
Rollin, 1964 Westy style....
Who says you can't still buy a splittie for under a grand?  You've just gotta drive out to the middle of freakin nowhere...
I have a pile of sheet metal laying here, waiting for the chop and weld operation....

'bout darned time i was behind the wheel of something without a radiator again.

Dealer Sticker from Don Coleman Motors, Dyersburg, Tennessee

Driver's side rough, including crap repair job with lots of bondo, rivets, and sheet tin.  donor section acquired from another bus, new nose too...

pretty straight pass side, the usual rot... rockers, cab floor corners, cargo floor really solid...

1964 Bus, us model, port of Louisiana, originally a walk-thru, kombi with middle, rear full benches, according to the m plate.  previous owner had converted to camper with jalousie windows, camper interior from a 67 mostly, and i'm leaving it that way.  Still had what was left of the og masonite panels, but i'll be making new birch panels, per the original westies,  pearl white, og color, original sapphire III radio,  painted hubcaps, 15 inch wheels that i'm saving for the double cab.  will return to a set of 14 inchers that i re-acquired from an old bus i used to own.
Guess that's about it.... gettin excited about this one.  Miss my splittie (been 10 years since i sold my last one, a 67 pop-top westy.)

Looking for some parts, used, hope to find them at bugapaluza.

I almost bought that bus, I went out in the middle of nowhere (when I looked at it it was in Jackson TN and still had an engine). I passed though, mainly because the guy lied about it. Still a good bus though. Who'd you buy it from?

Guy who runs a body shop north of there in Dresden.  He said that it had an engine in it, but they had put it in another bus some time back.  You said guy lied about it? lied about what?

Just about the condition of the bus. When he first listed it he had pictures of it without any nose damage and didn't take pictures of the rust in the passengers side floor. As I inquired he sent more pictures still with a straight nose panel and after I asked about rust he told me that there was none to speak of. I drove out there and there was obviously more damage than he had described and the nose was smashed, if I hadn't been with my dad I would have likely still picked it up.

I assume it was probably the same guy, as when I looked at it the guy ran a body shop and had the bus sitting elsewhere. Maybe accusing him of lying is a bit of a stretch, neglecting to tell me issues (even after I asked, and he sent pictures of an undamaged vehicle) before I drove across TN however isn't.

I'm still jealous though  8)

Perhaps another guy, may have changed hands before i bought it, because this dude told me in his first email that it, in his words, "needed everything"..... actually, by my calculations, it will need almost everything.... He said that it had a lot of rust... he's never seen my double cab.... and that it had been hit in the nose.  Actually, i expected much worse before getting there....

The worst part of the whole bus is the terrible repair job that was done on the drivers side.  It was tagged down low, from the wheel arch back, and the fixed it by riveting tin sheets to the back (cargo area) side of the bulkhead panel, and on top of the floor outer section.  then they loaded up the drivers side bulkhead with about 12 qts of bondo, to "smooth it out". .... nice.  The mangle floor support? still there, heck, why bother fixing that, just put the sheet metal over it....   anyway, i have a very nice, straight section of both from a donr bus, so it shouldn't be an issue.
The rust is actually not that bad, but it does need all of the regular stuff for this part of the country.
I never have understood why people have to lie/ omit things when trying to sell a vehicle over the internet.... it would make the buying process much easier if they didn't do crap like that... :?

I don't know what the hell happened to it, it was like it just woke up one morning like 20% consumed by rust....
For what it's worth, what's left is at least mostly straight.

Naw, The double cab is still there, but i figured with the amount of rust repair needed, i'm gonna try to fix this bus and my bug before moving on to the truck, besides, i'd like to go back mostly original with it, so i'm going to start searching out parts, and just stickpile them for a while.  no big rush, i've got plenty of other stuff to keep me busy.

Like things and notchbacks, and ghias, and jettas, and.... sorry that would keep going if i didn't stop it...

Theres a set of powder coated bus rims on samba for $100 and Ashley has that single that would make for good patch panels and gates for $600.
Fix the double or sell it back to me. You aint got a hair on yer @ss if you dont slam that double.

Good luck on the camper,if you can build a bug in a week shouldn't you be able to build a bus in 2? Holler if you need help holdin panels while you tack them in.

Yeah same here.  I'm all for volunteering some time at your shop just so I can learn if you don't mind someone hanging around helping.  Even help you with mine and ask for no discounts. :D
