Rick, just so you'll know you are not the only person in the world willing to take on a restoration of a "hopeless" VW, here's a story about a guy who is restoring a 1957 Samba that had sat face down in 50 feet of water since 1974.  Still, his doesn't have the rust issues that the double cab had.

modified, welded up the rear engine lid hinge carrier, got the bed all done up... used my extra set of cargo floors, modified them, flipped them over.... Running out of money and time, The single cab bed sections would have been $700 before shipping, and i would have had to modify those also, plus these we already sitting in the corner, you get the picture.  Got one gate partially repaired and hanging back on the body.... these late nights are killing me.  Still hoping to make the show.

The new bed.....

I saw the pics of them lifting that thing out of the lake.... crazy.

What i wanna know is, how does a bus that spent the last 25 years at the bottom of a lake have less rust than one sitting in a field in Virginia for probably about the  same time?   ::)

Less oxygen / air contact. There is no direct air and polutent contact under water. It is all filtered and dissolved by the water so less rust....

did that sound like i know what i am talking about ?   ;D ;D

started repairing / attaching the gates...  :(  They were a bit worse than i had previously thought.  Got the rot cut out, and the 2 side gates attached, still need to finish some of the frame repairs to the back side of them.. they may be tie-strapped to the bed for the show so i can concentrate on the mechanical work now... :D  Oh, and they actually open and shut great.   8)

Mostly, i just need sleep, but i guess that'll have to wait until after the show.   :-[

Almost as fun as dipping a cup into a CLEAN spring way back in the woods and looking down only to find a dead "possum" and a old car battery . O'well so much for clean Mtn. spring water. True story. I always wonder how an old car battery ended up in a Mtn, spring at least 3 miles from the closest dirt road. Hmmmm.

I have always thought somebody should write a book about things found inside a vehicle when you are gutting it for a restoration.   :D

Especially an air-cooled bus.  Stuff is crazy.  This one doesn't count, there was no floor left to retain anything.   ;D

This all depends on if you dipped the cup into the spring before or after the dead "possum" and the car battery.

One reason I switched to Evan Williams and Vodka although I think a worm still comes in top grade Cactus nectar. Beats the heck out finding a dead "Possom" looking at you . I'll ask Zen about that ;D

I can't afford the top grade stuff.  The only thing I've ever found at the bottom of the stuff I can afford is the bottom of the bottle!  At least, that's the only thing I can "remember" finding!   ;D
