1959 Double Cab

« on: August 13, 2009, 01:50:35 PM »
Well, as a number of you already knew, i inherited this big bad hunk of almost nothing left from Scott after Bugapaluza last year.
Since then many things have been going on, and i just haven't had the time to really dig into it..... until now.  I am almost finished up with an engine job that i am (re)doing and hope to start on him pretty soon.  I had it towed in to work yesterday afternoon, and, after a co-worker had laughed himself damned near to death, I clarified that yes, it shall run again one day, more or less....  The truck is far to gone to make a really nice finished product, but it is in my opinion worth saving nonetheless, between the age, rarity, and history that i now have for him.  I present for your viewing amusement..... My beautiful 1959 Crew Cab Pickup.

For now, let's call him Heinz.  He was born 23rd of May, 1959, making him a first year model, and still wears a little bit of the dove blue that he left the factory with..... very little of it.....

I would suggest photo-shopping it the way you want it to look-print a poster sized copy and hang it on your shop wall. I like it.

You know, Scott... Thanks to your cutting out of the floors, no additional rot was encountered.  The rain water just runs right out the bottom....
Not that there was much left to rot, i suppose....

About the only bad thing that's happened while it's been sitting up this past year is that i appear to have more than one wasp nest in it.... but that only adds to the excitement....

I've started tracing out cardboard templates for repair panels, am going to start with the engine compartment, then storage area under the bed, then floors, then the bed, then the rest, work my way forward.... or something like that.  It's basically like bailing water out of the ocean.....

Oh well, it'll get there..... Mark (my co-worker)... is still laughing.  Hope he doesn't hurt humself doing that.....

So, I let this thing sit for over a year, while i was gathering a few goodies and trying to mentally prepare myself up for the task at hand.  And, in the last few weeks, I started making some small patch panels, and prepping for tearing into this beastly undertaking.   So, I went in to work on Saturday, about 9 am, and untill nearly 8 pm worked my butt off.... actually, not quite, it's still there....I did stop for lunch.  Fat people gotta eat.

First, i began with removal of most of the badly rotted sections, all of the reamaining floor, rotted outriggers, jacking points, and floor supports, and the remnants of the rear crossmember.  Last, finally started welding new metal in... Replacement floor supports (the two in the rear were rotted out, under the fuel tank section), and the rear frame crossmember.  I even started welding in one of the rear corners before calling it a day.... Here's some pics from it.... I particularly like the pic of the pile of rubble that i either cut off it, or that fell off of it while i was cutting something else off.  Enjoy.  To quote Forrest Gump, "I'm kinda tired...".  It felt kinda good.

What i started with

Floor completely gone... looking pretty scary at this point

Jezz !!  I wonder what would happen if you tossed a bag of Miracle-Gro on that pile?  A new baby P.U. maybe named Tetus-2 ?

No way... I am afraid that a strong, chemical based compound like Miracle Gro would dull the paint....

You put it on a lift..you are a brave one.
I think this truck is hard as wood pecker lips!
I'd rather set money on fire than work on some hacked up super beetle or some tired old westy. This truck is at least worth saving. Honestly you will get twice what you put in it if you ever sell it.
