WTB tools

« on: April 06, 2015, 02:39:49 PM »
I'm a complete beginner , teaching myself how to work on my 73'Beetle. Checking off my bucket list ;)  I need tools. Almost any and everything used for basic tune ups to begin with.  I need that long wrench used to take off the crank shaft pulley .. I also need a new crank shaft pulley. Any suggestions are welcome.  I'll be at bugapaluza if  anyone has old tools for sale... thanks! !

If you come to Bugapaluza, drive the extra 3 miles to Harbor Freight and spend $30-50 on basics like a good set of box end wrenches (10, 13, 14, 15, 17, 19 mm- others are nice but these are necessary). Large and small flat and Phillips screwdrivers. 3/8" ratchet, sockets and extension and spark plug socket. Normal and needle nose pliers. Feeler gauges.

Then I'd go to ACE or sears and get 21, 22, 24 and 36mm wrenches if you can find them. Might have to go to a northern tool for the 36mm. Or you can get a socket and a 1/2" ratchet.

John Muir's complete idiots guide to keeping your VW alive outlines a "phase 1" tool roll for maintenance and getting off the side of the road. His progressive phases of tool sets are for more in depth repairs.

Fwiw, you'll need a 30mm wrench to get the pulley nut off. What's wrong with the pulley?

Great list!  I wish my book would hurry up and arrive! !! I am going to pick up tools that weekend.  The pulley is rusted possibly causing the belt to shred.

There are some VW specific tools. Here are a few that come to mind:
Hub cap removal tool - this is a clip that fits in to the two holes in each hub cap
Flywheel locking tool -this keys in to the case and flywheel so that you can wrench without everything spinning around
36 mil rear axel nut removal tool - this lets you get at the rear brakes
Distributor drive gear puller
Oil pump puller
Case splitting tool
Clutch aligning tool
Carb. wrench - this is an angled/bent wrench that makes it easier to get at the front nut that holds the carb down

Most of these are not going to be used often, but are nice to have to tear down an engine, remove the flywheel, and change the clutch.

I have take a picture of a few things that I keep in the bus that might not be on everybody's list. There is a punch, fuel line clamp, extension, test light, wire strippers, wire crimpers, assorted wire connectors, breaker bar, gloves, kneeling/sitting pad, cold chisel, and 15 mil ratcheting wrench.
