Dash ?  tank?  You can get a tank unit from Mid-America. About $50.00 new. Not sure about the dash unit. Be sure to find out which unit is bad before buying.  I have found out over the years that the problem was the tank unit or wiring to it. If You find that the tank unit is bad, go with the new part. You only want to do this job once. You have to pull the engine then the tank to replace the unit or cut a hole in the floor when you locate where unit is. The dash unit is simple. You might try a used dash unit if the tank unit is OK.  Good luck.  Another wonderful idea from VW. ;D ;D ;D

On the later water-cooled bay windows they made in Mexico in the 80's and 90's, they put a small removable pannel over the sending unit for the tank.  Too bad it took 'em 30 something years to figure out it was needed.   :-\

Sorry to get back so late....I DID cut a whole out to make it easy to reach my sender...I thought I needed a gauge the needle works when I connect the power side...I believe I may need to rewire from the sender to to the gauge....
