Wtb 77mm or 83mm pistons and cylinders

« on: November 11, 2014, 11:15:42 PM »
Title said it all. I have traced down two sets of rings for the 83mm pistons I am trying to rering. The two sets have been too tall (2.5mm tall instead of 2mm to fit the width of the grooves on the piston). I am at my wits end and just need to move forward with this project instead of chasing unicorns.

Anybody?

Oh, and before I have to explain why I don't just build a 1600, it's because I have all of those parts set aside for the next project and I really want to build the 40hp engine. I would just through 85.5s on there but it has a 64mm crank in the short block and the 40hp rods. I don't believe the wrist pins would fit and I know the jugs won't fit.

I have 1 brand new 40 HP VW Piston and Cyl in the VW box, complete with rings, etc.
I only have 1.
I bought it from Al Johnson's in Dalton.
Trade me something for it...

Travis- I thought I had looked at them and they had some cracks in the skirts or something? If they all inspect out well, I might be interested!

KC- if its only one p/c and it is 77mm, then it doesn't exactly help me out since I have a set of 83mm and I need one of those. I would absolutely jump on that if it were 83mm!

I found a set of 83mm big bore pistons and cylinders for $134.99. I went a head and ordered them.

I have a couple of odd pistons and cyl. I need to look at them and see what sizes they are.
Good luck and I am glad you found what you were looking for.

They appear to be 76?  They have 7695 stamped on then and the measurement with a ruler was about that

I don't know how I've missed this thread for so long.  I have 3 used 40 horse pistons and cylinders out in my garage somewhere.  I had a 40 horse block that had been line bored.  I haven't gotten rid of it, but I haven't seen it in years.  In fact, the rest of the engine should be somewhere in one of the piles of junk in the garage.  It was a complete engine that would turn over and had compression.  I gave 50 bucks for it at Bug-A-Paluza (since we've had more, that's now known as Bug-A-Paluza 1), brought it home, tore it down, had the block lined bored . . . and moved on to other projects.  That was 1999.  I know where 3 of the pistons and cylinders are.  If you need anything else for your 40 horse project, I've probably got it . . . and I probably can't find it . . . but you are welcome to it if I can.

Zen, I originally bought that piston and cyl for you... LOL.
Find the engine parts and I will take them and build an engine around my new piston... LOL.

I really wish I could find the other one to this set.  The pistons had been knurled.  When I was a youngster I have vague memories of my dad taking pistons to an automotive machine shop and having them knurled to raise up the worn surfaces on the skirt and bring them back to spec.  These were the first knurled pistons I had seen since the early 70s.  Now we just toss the old ones and buy new.

Pistons and cylinders are on and the longblock is done!!!

I started to put tin and exhaust on but the exhaust is different than normal. I have a 40hp exhaust but the J tubes and heater boxes don't fit in there!!! Gah!!!!

Does anyone have 40hp heater boxes or J tubes that would fit?
