WTB 1600 DP heads - bolt on condition.

« on: April 28, 2008, 12:42:06 PM »
Just got my 1600 dp head drilled and tapped for a new stud and when I pulled the other one, I have what appears to be a small teeny tiny CRACK.  :(  :(  :(
Mama always told me to stay off the crack, I guess I need a new head....(must be read in the voice of Forrest Gump for full effect....)

I guess I want a set of them as I am nervous about mixing worn and newer heads.  I am going to buy a new set if I have to, but would be open to a gently used set where someone has "upgraded" their motor.

I am not interested in sets where the valves have to be installed or lapped.  I want to just bolt and go.  Let me know what you have.
If anyone has any preferences as to which ones to buy, let me know as well.

I need to stay with a stock set up as I am running an Autostick and the extra HP would just be lost on the little teeny tiny clutch that I have...
Thanks,
KC

If you are thinking about buying used heads/valves,  get some history on the mileage that the exhaust valves have on them. The exhaust valves are the weak link in aircooled VW's.   Any used head I use Will get a set of exhaust valves no matter the mileage unless they came with new valves. If they look new I still will remove them to make sure they are "sitted" and the guides are good.  Just a word to the wise.

I appreciate it.
A local triangle person has said he has some single port heads / intake.
Is it going to be better to go the single port rout and get a new carb, or is it going to be better to get new / rebuilt heads and just keep the "new" carb that has been on the car for about 3 years.

Thats a loaded question. Duel port heads perform a lil better mostly at highway speeds. Single ports seem to be much more predictable/reliable.
I'm likin the single port With a nice simple carb setup. But i gave up tryin to be speed racer on I-75 months ago.

I like single port engines. They seem to have a little more low end torque. Two things to do if you go the single port route. The intake will have to have a vacumn port like your duel intake has. You can try to locate a '68-70 auto-stick intake or '70 type-2(bus) intake or you can cut and weld a port into any single port manuel shift intake '66-'70 type-1.
You will also have to change the two upper, inner cly. head studs on each side of the case. They have to be the same lenght as the upper, outer studs. I hope I didn't confuse you there. You can use a PICT-3 or a 30-31 carb without an adapter. :?
Like Scott said, single ports are very reliable. Thats what is going on my Allison

There was an error while liking
