You might check the voltage regulator before replacing the Gen.    At least 75%-80% of bad gen. are caused by a bad regulator and if you have to replace the gen. never install a new gen without a new reg.

Even if the regulator is good, if the old contact point style, replace it with a new Bosch solid state version.  My bus had one electrical problem after the other for years. I had replaced the generator several times and had put at least 4 regulators on it.  Batteries would go bad about as fast as I could intall them.  It would blow light bulbs constantly.  A few times, for no know reason, smoke would start coming out of the instrument pannel.  I put in a new solid state regulator and all of those electrical issues instantly went away.

Most of the time it is the reg. that causes the Gen. to burn up. With no load on the Gen it sometimes will charge over 18-20 volts for a little while until it burns up. Here is what we did to see which one was bad. Take the wires off the gen then put the +lead of a volt meter on the D+ terminal of the Gen. Run a piece of wire on the minus terminal  of the Gen. to  a good ground . Put the - lead of the meter on the ground wire.  Set your meter on about 25 volts DC . Have somebody start the engine and you watch the meter.  Rev the engine up and see if the meter about "jumps" off the scale. If it does the gen is ok SHUT THE ENGINE OFF . Replace the reg.   IF not replace Gen/Reg.

there are several places in town that should have or be able to get new/rebuilt ones,  mainly foriegn, tri state imports, american alternator,  and the big three chains
