Wheels for '64 Type 3

« on: April 25, 2011, 11:37:24 PM »
Going to start looking for a set of stock rims for the '64 Notchback. I know they are wide fives, but are they the same size as beetle wheels? Any condition should be fine as long as they are round. I plan on getting them sandblasted and powder coated anyways.

Have you checked with the guy you bought the Notch from Russ?

At one time, he told me he had the stock rims too, i thought, but i could be wrong?   ???

Hmm I will have to check with him on that. He never mentioned having the stock rims to me.

If not, will beetle rims fit or are they unique to Type 3s?

They'll fit, I am pretty sure, but the offset i believe is different.  They might look kinda tucked in.  I'd stick with the type three stuff.  They look better anyways IMO.

Travis has those thing wheels for $15.
Might want to just see, also they might be cheeper for tires at 14".
Just a thought.
Also, give me a price for the wide 5's you have on there now, I am thinking I am just going to build the '70 bus and I could use some wheels.
If you want to look at the bus wheels, (again, 14") you could see how they look, I have 2 that hold air, they will be wider than the beetle wheels as well.

I had a friend that used the 14" Thing rim on his '67 Bug without a hitch. The "Thing" rim stands alone .  The 14" and 15" bus rim offset is to deep to use on a Bug and I would say they would not work on a Type-3. The only difference between the Type-1 and a Type-3 is the front axle.  The swing axle on the rear is set up like a Type-1.    I think I would look at the 14" Thing rim.  They are wider and I think would look good on a "Notch" .  You would retain the stock look but putting a little more rubber on the road.

I'm not sure what the wheels I have in my collection are but they are wide 5s and kinda rusty. I made the "wheel greel" out of one of them with a spare weber grill grate and some legs I welded on to it.

I can see if I have pictures of them somewhere.

How much for the Thing rims? Stock Type 3 rims were 15", right?
