Wanted: Window Regulator '99 Beetle

« on: March 06, 2007, 10:52:55 AM »
Hi,
I'm looking for a window regulator for my '99 VW Beetle.
First the switches fell off, used a swiss army knife toothpick to get it to work.  Then our homemade job failed. Just glad the window is up instead of stuck.
Thanks

I assume you are talking about a New Beetle (water-cooled, not air.)  If so, if the cables/regulator let go inside the door, the best bet would be to install a kit that is sold at the dealership to upgrade the original plastic clips to the newer, metal backed style clips.  The original ones were a poor design which would break and cause the window to a.) get stuck in the up position, or, b.) go slamming down into the door when you are driving down the road.  you do need a special tool to install them, and I just so happen to have said tool (for me to use, not a loaner).  If you just order a new regulator, all the ones I've seen that come new still have the old style clips on them.
The retrofit kit replaces the clips and damaged cable on the broken side and also has the clips to upgrade the opposite door.
Let me know if I can help.

I guess you have to have a degree from M.I.T. to replace the Reg. You would think after 70+ years VW would know how to build a window reg.
Long live the A/C Beetle !!  At lease most of the Bugs go to Bug Heaven with their orginal regs.

i don't know about that... I replaced the driver side window regulator on my 73 super as well as my 74 autostick... and also one in a customers 61... although the 61 really just needed cleaning and i still have the OG regulator (he insisted i just replace it)... the other two were the cable type and they were simply stripped out... i really wonder what my 98 has... i dont think i shared the story of the convertible top switch yet???

Maybe the Fla. weather loves to eat window regs.  I will have to say that we replaced more regs. on Bugs after '72 than ever before. VW must have gotten into their " lets build really cheap and bad parts" mode. Sorta like the '74 Super Beetle front seats, cooling fans when they went to the alt., early S.B. front ends and the chrome trim around the windows turning black when they changed to plastic.
I'm not even going to get into the rotten window lifts for Rabbits, Audi rust, rust, rust.
The older I get the more I get into the pre-'68 Bugs and this goes for the Type-2 also( I can't belive I said that     )
