wanted; swing axle trans

« on: November 26, 2008, 05:01:38 PM »
I am in need of a swing axle trans for my 65 ....mine has barfed up some parts .  Too hard on the shifting and clutch shock I suppose :D
Anyone have one I can buy, just need something to put in until I can get mine apart and fixed or junked.
Thanks.
Rick.

Well I'm guessing that I have damaged a shift fork or 2 :P  I have been shifting like a madman...then one day no more shifty    If I play with the shifter I can get it in 1st then it will go to second no problems...second to third...gotta play with the shifter then it will go to fourth fine and back down to third fine  third to second...no no!  Gotta play with it to get it back in second and then first is fine.  I can always get reverse BUT it feels like there is some kind of binding going on in reverse...the car will not coast, feels like the brakes are dragging but pop it in neutral and the thing rolls fine.  SOMETIMES first has a similar binding feel and sometimes it's fine  I knew this trans was going to have trouble...It's the only part of the car that I don't have any receipts for  I also knew that slammin through the gears was a short lived activity on a unknown item. I just don't have the dollars yet to get a prostreet or a KCR built unit. I would imagine the axles and drums are lovin it too! :D

I'd be sure that the shift plate under the shift lever didn't break or got out of adjustment ( aka speed shifting).  Could be you might have snapped off the corner of the 1st , 2nd shift fork. Some were brass and were know to come apart under best conditions.   Any noisy ?    Didn't pop the nose cone in half did you ?

The nose cone is fine...and there is no abnormal noise.  I have a BugPack shifter that is reduced throw and that seems o.k.  I suspect the major parts of the trans are o.k.  maybe a shift fork or 2 is bent or broken...wont know until I tear it apart.  From everything I have read it looks like text book shift fork damage...but of cource there is the unknown...we'll see as soon as I can open it up I guess!   At least I know I have been beating on it, some folks will swear they didnt do anything at all to cause the problem at hand  :D

Have you taken a  VW tranny apart before ?   If not I can walk you through it.
It doesn't come apart like you think it would and you can do some damage pretty fast.
