WANTED: 1 late bus (68-79) axle shaft

« on: June 07, 2005, 03:32:58 AM »
The teeth are mucked up on one of my Bus axles.  I had to press the center hub of a bad CV joint off today.  It was really hard and the hub shattered.  At least I got it off, but the teeth on the end of the shaft were messed up, which is why I had to press it off.  I have tried to hone the teeth to be able to fit in a CV joint, but I just can't get it right.  If anyone has a spare axle from a late bus in better condition than the one I have now, I would gladly take it off of your hands. Travis, If no one in the club has a axle, check with Jim, as in Lockhart. I bet he has a collection of them. Tell him I sent you down there. It may or may not help.

I will check with him...I thought about Alvin Vaughn in Dalton.  He has (or had) several buses on his lot...maybe he'll part with one or two axles.

I did take my Dremel with a diamond bit and was able to clear away enough metal to drive a spare hub on and drive it off again.  I didn't take away the metal so as to not allow the C clip enough to hold it on.  In other words, the C clip will still go on and do it's job.

Another thing...when I changed the CV joints on Oscar, the joints that were on there were dated 7/77.  The ones on Sweetpea were dated 8/78.  Taken care of, you can see that these joints will last quite a long time...27 and 28 years, in this case.

Travis , if the clip will stay OK , use it. You can close the clip up a bit to be sure. You are correct on the life of a CV joint. Its amazing how long they will last when serviced like they are supposed to be, new boots and re-pack once in a while.

What's really amazing is how long they will last when totally abused!     When I purchased Homer all 4 boots were non-existant.  I know the previous owner who drove it for over 4 years had not done anything to them . . . but the guy he bought it from had repacked the CVs on one side and replaced the other with used CVs and boots that he bought from Mr. Vaughn.  I am pretty sure that when I finally had to pull them apart, they were all original CVs.  Two were OK and replaced the other two with what apeared to be original CVs from a 71 Westy.

If I had taken the joints apart and repacked them when I first bought the boots (a couple of days after I bought the bus) instead of waiting until they started giving trouble, they would probably still be fine today!
