He told me that in Ringgold yesterday and I just kinda walked around in a daze the rest of the day.

Homer will probably have "rejection" issues just as the Vanagonagon did when Kyle transplanted the diesel engine in the stretch. Unknown territory sometimes is "just to much to bear" (with a heavy southern accent).

The bottom end is together.  The case is sealed (hopefully anyway) up.  The oil cooler is bolted on.  The oil pump is in.  The tin behind the pulley and the pulley are in place.  A BRAND SPANK'N NEW set of 85.5 mm pistons and cylinders are installed.

As soon as I get my heads, I'll get the rest of it together and installed.  If all goes well, I'll be driving Homer to work Tuesday morning.   8)

Only problem is I got the distributor drive one tooth off.   :x   Oh well, I'm not tearing it back down to fix it and I'm not about to attempt to pull it out and re-install it with the case sealed up.  Been there, done that, chewed up the brass gear.  I'll deal with the distrbutor being turned wrong.  Won't be the first time.

Well, all didn't "go well."  I had a broken stud that DID NOT want to be removed from it's resting place in one of my newly rebuilt heads.  After about an hour of welding nuts on it and breaking off little bits at a time, Kyle and I had it down flush with the head.  If you ever need a broken bolt center punched absolutly dead center, go see Kyle!  We put it in his drill press and drilled it out 1/8", then went back through it with a 1/4" bit.  The threads of the bolt were all that was left . . . they pulled out like a spring and left the threads in the head perfect and untouched!

The only problem was that created a big delay in my day.  I didn't actually start working on putting the engine back together until about 5:00pm.  Except for the flywheel, the long block is together and the valves are set.  I still have to set the endplay, then put the tin, distributor, generator stand, intake and exhaust on it and get it installed.  I see two or three long nights ahead of me!   ](*,)

By the way, does anyone have an extra lower piece of tin for a doghouse cooler?  I've got the middle piece that directs the air downwards, but the bottom piece that takes the hot air through the front breast tin is missing.  I know no one will believe this, but I "think" it fell off going down the road somewhere!

Don`t start bragging about the exhaust stud repair or you will never be able to do it again.  I`ve done the same thing ,the next time ? Well ,How much fun can you have trying to get a broken drill bit out of a CUSTOMERS head while he was watching. Whoops !! :(  :(

Murphy's law stikes again.  I improvised a tool to set my end play . . . got it set to .003" . . . pulled the flywheel to put the main seal in and guess what?  I don't have one!  I had two gasket sets that I thought included the main seal, and somewhere I know I've got at least one extra . . . but when it came time to put one in, I realized that neither of these gasket sets came with one and I can't find my extra.  Soooooooooooo . . . I guess I'm at a standstill again tonight.  But once I've got the seal and torque the gland nut down, the rest ought to go pretty fast.  At least I hope it does . . . Friday is approching FAST!   8-[

I don`t think the gasket sets ever came with the main seal that I can remember. You do have the "O" ring for the flywheel. Don`t forget to replace it. I hope you will get some "running" time on Homer before you leave.  It makes me nervous to "hit the road" with a zero hour engine no matter who built it. A 1000 mile test drive ? Whew !!!

The seal kits I got had a main seal shrink wrapped over the kit.  Well, they did at one time.  I got them at show somewhere a while back . . . I think it was something the vendor did.  At one point in time I had one in Homer's glove box . . . I was taking it to someone and they ended up not needing it.  I've seen it in there every time I opened the glove box door for the last couple of years.  At least it WAS there until I needed it.

I had to get a wisdom tooth "extracted" today, so while I was out from work, I went by Mainly Foreign and got a new seal.  Got the end play set, the seal AND new O ring installed, clutch and pressure plate bolted on and most of the tin on.  I have to bolt on the generator stand, intake and exhaust and stick this thing back in.

It's looking like the test drive is going to be to Effingham.   [-o<

Homer won't be going to Effingham this time.  I came down with another respratory infection and wasn't able to finish up the engine and get it installed.  Guess we'll be taking our vacation in a Mitsubishi Expo.   :pukeright:

Don't worry 'bout Homer.  He will be back on the road as soon as I get back home and have two or three free hours to finish up.  I just have to bolt on the muffler and intake and the engine is finished.  I've also got to shorten the transmission input shaft.  It's been bottoming out in the crank shaft . . . and is probably why the last engine's front main bearing loosened in the case.  Once I get it installed, I have to hook up an electric fuel pump . . . the engine I just built is in a fuel injected case.  It doesn't have the hole for the fuel pump drilled out.

Anyway, we're still going to Effingham, just not in Homer.  But there's always next year.  At least this way I can rack up some miles close to home . . . which might be good just in case I forgot some little something . . . like tighening a rod bolt or leaving a wrist pin clip out . . .
